Real Desktop Browser for Android

Considering how mature the desktop browsers are, I'm very surprised how immature the mobile versions are. Since Opera offers a desktop browser for Linux, why not offer that same browser for those of us with machines powerful enough to handle the desktop browser, instead of being handicapped with the terrible and frustrating mobile browsers?

I had a netbook with less power than my Asus Transformer and it had no problems handling any desktop browser I choose to use...so why am I stuck with having to deal with the limitations of mobile browsers?

Just let me choose what is best for my machine. If it can handle a desktop browser, let me have a desktop browser.

I'm not talking about changing the user agent...that is just fooling sites into thinking I have a desktop browser yet still leaves me with the limitations of a mobile browser.

Open up the real potential of my tablet...give me a desktop browser.

How tired are you of dealing with inadequate mobile browsers?

There is a very effective workaround on the XDA developers site. Works brilliantly as a second-best option....

It's presumably not that simple a thing to do. Anyway I've never felt like the mobile browser was "inadequate".

Just One line of text in the user prefs of opera:config.

Link to the xda site is already on this forum - it's here in this thread:

and discussed here:

Believe me, when even sites like Sainsbury's supermarket in UK forced me onto their pathetic mobile site (via usablenet) it became essential to change user agent to desktop, not to mention others like the BBC whose mobile site does virtually nothing useful.

What I don't understand though is WHY all this insistence on mobile site with no choice when more and more are going over to smartphones so there's less and less need - - - 4 years ago perhaps, but not now.

You can change the user agent to desktop in the settings > advanced menu.

But these are problems with the websites, not an inadequacy of the mobile browser.

.....

that won't magically turn your opera mobile into opera desktop with mail, irc, sessions, etc.
i'm pretty sure what joecanuck means is a feature-filled browser like you can get for a PC, instead of a basic browser designed for use on phones.

I almost hate to bring up the fact it is possible to install a full distribution of linux on an android device. Worked fine on my old phone, I haven't bothered to try new one yet. See no reason why it wouldn't, it's just battery drain is bad enough already with gingerbread.
