Why is Opera so crash happy in Linux (Xubuntu)
Have Opera 11.51 installed on my copy of Xubuntu 32bit, 11.04. Actually have it installed on 6 systems like this and 2, 64bit computers. Doesn't make any difference which one is being used. Why is it so crash happy, especially when signing out of secure sites? I love Opera in Windows, but in Linux it's almost to undependable to tolerate. I do not change very many things in any of the settings. Disable Unite. Don't use the mail. Disable referrer information is about all.
I know Yahoo mail warns you about current Opera hasn't been tested with that new (crappy) Yahoo mail, but that is one common place that Opera is almost unusable.
Thank you
You haven't really provided any information about when Opera crashes (other than a brief mention of unspecified secure sites). It would help to know what you were doing at the time of the crash and all sites you had open. On the whole Opera for Linux is no less stable than Opera for Windows. We certainly don't see a massive discrepancy in the amount of crash reports, taking account of their relative market share. However, perhaps one of your favoured sites does have a Linux specific crash. This could be any one of the tabs you have open or it might be one in your Speed Dial (particularly if a refresh value is set). It also needn't be the tab you are currently focussed on as some JavaScript may be running in the background.
PM, me your email address so that I can look up your specific crashes (I presume you included your address when you uploaded crash reports).
If you are also able to provide a list of your frequently visited sites and current speed dial entries then so much the better. Finally, include the contents of 'opera --full-version' (run this in a terminal window) so I know more about your system configuration.

thanks for the reply.
no, i didn't include my e-mail address when submitting crash report and in fact usually don't even send them!
i very seldom have more than one tab open at a time (i have 4 eyes but still can only see one thing at a time).
as i said. just about ANY secure site i've used such as my banks site (5/3), my personal ira account site (principal.com) yahoo mail, for just a few.
What i was doing was simply logging out, as stated, from any of the above 3 sites.
i've seen speed dial, but have no use for it and don't even remember how to make that page show up. my start page is about:blank, so hitting the home button goes there.

i think i have the problem remedied. i figured out how to install the most current version of seamonkey, which is my favorite browser in windows and linux anyway, so i may just remove opera anyway, then i don't have to worry about it or mess with it.
thanks again
Edit:
Yep, it's official! Screw this Opera in Linux. It just crashed again simply starting a download of a very big file through Filesserve. Now I have to wait to get that file because of that. Don't know what the issue is and don't care now. Seamonkey is working PERFECTLY!!
End of my discussion here.

You can't really expect us to fix something when you are not even willing to upload a crash report. You really need to help us to help yourself. Whilst it is great that Seamonkey is working for you now I hope you will do them the courtesy of of providing crash information when it happens (which it will, as none of the browsers are crash proof and they are all under constant heavy development), otherwise you may find you are always flipping between browsers.
As you see above I said I don't USUALLY submit crash reports, but this has happened so often I got PO'd and went ahead and did, SEVERAL times, although I didn't include an e-mail address.
Opera NEVER crashes on my Windows machines so never had to submit anything and Seamonkey never crashes either, in Windows OR Linux. That's why they're supposedly called stable releases.
As I also said at the end of my last post, this is the end of my discussion on this matter as Opera is being removed from all 10 machines I monitor. Not even worth the trouble for something that is a part time OS anyway.

@Xmarx. Please try starting Opera with a clean profile as follows (this assumes you use bash as your shell):
Same problem or not?
If yes, you can find the crash log in /var/tmp, upload it to your My Opera files or somewhere else convenient and give me the link so that I can analyse it.
opera -pd $(mktemp -d -t opera_test_profile_XXXXXX) &

@Xmarx ... you should probably have started your own thread. Though I have to ask ... why such an old version of Mandriva?
I've tried a lot of Linux distros and its the only one which works perfectly with my mobile phone !!

I was browsing the Amazon for quite some time and it never crashed !
BTW, the crash dump I can find is for the older version 11.10. The new version used to crash like the 11.10 BTW, when clicking on the 'Stop' button !
Anyway, here is the link !!

When I boot into my work environment (CentOS 6) Opera is extremely stable, but for that environment, for security reasons I do not allow browser plugins.
When I boot into my regular desktop (CentOS 6 and Ubuntu) I do get some crashes, but it almost always seems to be on pages that have flash.
I think Opera might have issues with latest flash. Java on the other hand, there are some sites I go to that use Java where firefox and chrome consistently crash but Opera doesn't.
I do not know if flash (or another plugin) is the culprit in your problem, but I can say I can't wait for HTML5 to take over and we can live in a world without problem causing plugins.
