Problems Installing Opera for Ubuntu on Dell mini

I have recently migrated over to Linux and have been using my Dell mini with Ubuntu (8.04) and was trying to install Opera.
Here's what i see after I've clicked 'Install Package'

dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
package architecture (i386) does not match system (lpia)
(Reading database ... 101213 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking opera (from .../opera_11.51.1087_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing /home/dbryant/Download/opera_11.51.1087_i386.deb ( --install):
trying to overwrite '/usr/share/app-install/desktop/opera.desktop' , which is also in package app-install-data-commercial

As mentioned, I am relatively new to Linux and would like to know if it is possible to install Opera on my Dell mini and if so how do I remedy this problem?

Hello, welcome to the Opera forums.

Ubuntu 8.04 seems like an old release, even for a LTS version.

What processor architecture does your computer have.? There are separate versions of Opera for Intel (i386) and AMD (x86_64).

Opera maintains a .deb repository. It's an easy way to install and new Opera versions can be updated through the update manager. Instructions can be found on http://deb.opera.com/

Another option is to open the Synaptic Package Manager > Settings > Repositories > Other Software tab. Opera may already be in the list, and you'll just need to check the stable or beta and add the 2011 key from the Authentication tab or use the command line.
