Needed Opera Improvements
5October2011Greetings.
I have previously given input about making Opera more user friendly»
ImproveOpera
Much to my surprise, Opera has seemingly (finally) remedied item #3 at that thread.
I posted elsewhere about the "Opera won't finish loading tabs problem" -
which seems to be resolved ...
It is possible to use a user created extension to give Opera some form memory ... but
it would be better (in my opinion) if Opera natively supported form memory (like MFF).
Item #1 at that thread is still (in my opinion) a serious Opera shortcoming.
I now add Item #4, which is that Opera.exe always runs at around (at least) 10-15% CPU usage
even if Opera is minimized and not in use. I have stopped using Opera because of this.
The problem is NOT the tabs that might be open at the time.
Other browser exes do not have any CPU usage when minimized/not active with the same tabs open.
I have stopped using Opera because of this.
AEN, regarding Item 1, but doesn't Opera allow you to select the complete text by a double click and moreover the options (cut, copy, search etc etc) once you do that.. isn't that better?
I agree with the new Item 4, I moved from Chrome because of the lack of master password, moved from Mozilla as it just ate up too much of my resources and now Opera seems to be doing the same thing.. Don't have a clue why, I do like it better than Mozilla but need to get this sorted out and with Item 2 as well, frankly was expecting that it would have the form saving feature, the feature where it asks to put in the form details in Preferences is good for me but my family members also use this desktop so would make their life easier as well if that worked

There is (in my opinion) no comparision between how MFF (or Chrome) select text & how Opera selects text.
MFF/Chrome have the "Shift-Left Arrow" (& other) option(s) that Opera does not have.
Opera only allows the click/select or drag/highlight/select. Both of those require the mouse.
The MFF/Chrome select text options allow "exact to the character" selecting with the keyboard -
which is much easier & more ergonomic & convenient ... I am always selecting text from webpages ...
I have never had CPU usage problems with MFF and not with recent Chrome releases either.
(I only use MSIE for updating from MS ...). I am not "talking about" how much CPU usage
any browser uses WHILE I am using the browser. Opera.exe runs at around (at least) 10-15% CPU usage
even when Opera is minimized and not in use. Earlier Chrome releases did that as well ... but not anymore.
Feature requests belong in the wish-list.but the text selection thing is already there many times. Autofill and Roboform support are also frequent requests. Try an advanced search of the wish list.
Not here. There may be something wrong with your system, or a plugin that is causing that.

There is nothing wrong with my system(s).
Opera does this on ALL my XP laptops.
It seems to me that Opera has a problem.
I disabled plugins, but Opera.exe was still posting 10-15% CPU usage when not in use.
I closed all tabs one by one until I only had 1 tab @ google.com open.
Then Opera.exe dropped to 1% CPU usage,
I then repeatedly opened a new tab @ google.com until I had about 10 tabs open.
Opera.exe CPU usage started climbing with each new tab that I opened.
It seems that each open tab adds about 1% CPU usage to Opera.exe - even when Opera is idle.
These tabs are google.com tabs. There is no flash, no animation - nothing to cause CPU usage.
As far as I can tell, there is some problem with Opera.exe.
Other browser exes do not show increases in idle CPU usage as I open more & more tabs.
So my other posted items are also elsewhere @ myopera.
It just shows that Opera should address these things - but has not.
Every browser (Gecko, MSIE, Chrome) has built in form memory.
Only Opera does not.
My opinion remains that Opera needs become more competitive.

Here, cpu usage is 0-1% with 10 Google search results tabs open, so it must be something different at your end. Try turning off all thumbnail options: "show thumbnails in tabs" "show thumbnails when hovering tabs" etc.

Greetings.
I do not display the Tab Bar.
"Enable thumbnails" and "Show thumbnails" were both disabled anyway.
When I have 15 SpeedDial tabs open, Opera.exe registers 0-1% CPU usage.
I disabled "Discover local Unite users" just because that is unnecessary.
I deselected "Enable JavaScript" just because there was nothing else left to try.
When I deselect "Enable JavaScript", idle Opera.exe CPU usage drops from 10-15% to 0-1%.
After I then re-enable "Enable JavaScript", Opera.exe CPU usage has not (yet) gone awry.
I have no idea what the JavaScript connection is ... but
I will be pleased if I can "normalize" Opera.exe idle CPU usage this way.
Any helpful insights/replies appreciated...
