Moving Quoted Content Down in Reply
Greetings,Whenever I hit "reply" to an email message, the quoted content is right on the top line and the cursor is right before this quoted content. In other words, I am going to start typing my reply on the same line as the quoted content. This means I always have to hit "Enter" twice in order to move the quoted content down a few lines so that my reply can go above it.
Does anyone know if it is possible to set up the mail client so that when I hit reply it automatically inserts a few spaces between my reply and the quoted content?
Thank you.
Normally, you shouldn't be typing anywhere about the quoted text unless you need to mention something really quick before you begin quoting and replying to the different parts (after trimming) below. See <http://operawiki.info/TopAndBottomPostingBad> for more info. If you reply properly, the default position of the quoted text and cursor is correct.
However, you can close down Opera and edit accounts.ini in the mail folder (see opera:about for the location). For each account, there's a Reply= and Forward= setting that you can customize. To add a blank line, put \n at the beginning of the value. See <http://www.opera.com/browser/tutorials/mail/advanced/#custom-reply> for all that's supported.

Thank you for the links, I will read them.
I don't believe we respond to email the same way, reading your response here. I just write my response above their email, and send it back.
For instance, here is an email I received today.
"Hi Mike,
How are things going with you today?
Let me know.
Jody"
If I simply clicked on reply and began typing right where the cursor was, this is exactly what it would look like. Notice how there should be two blank lines after my response, and right before the date:
Hi Jody,
Everything is going great, thanks for asking. On Wed, 05 Oct 2011 15:34:42 -0400, Jody <jodyc@ncwcom.com> wrote:

Your reply should look like this:
On Wed, 05 Oct 2011 15:34:42 -0400, Jody <jodyc@ncwcom.com> wrote: > How are things going with you today? Everything is going great, thanks for asking. -- Mike
(Notice how the rest of the message is trimmed and only the exact part being replied to is quoted)
Or, if you want to include the "Hi Jody" as an introductory statement, you could put your "Hi Jody" like this:
Hi Jody! On Wed, 05 Oct 2011 15:34:42 -0400, Jody <jodyc@ncwcom.com> wrote: > How are things going with you today? Everything is going great, thanks for asking. -- Mike
If she would have asked you 3 different things that you wanted to reply to, it'd look like this:
On Wed, 05 Oct 2011 15:34:42 -0400, Jody <jodyc@ncwcom.com> wrote: > Question 1 Answer 1 > Question 2 Answer 2 > Question 3 Answer 3 -- Mike
In other words, to be clear when replying, you need to:
1. Remove stuff you're not replying to. (Don't worry about the stuff you remove. Both of you have it in the original messages that you need to keep. Also, use threading to group all messages in a conversation.)
2. Group the part you're replying to with your response for that part.
3. Do so from top to bottom as people read from top to bottom.
4. At the end of your message, sign it using "--", a space and a newline and then your signature (your first name or full name and other stuff depending on how formal it is. You usually don't need your full name if it's in the To header next to your email address).
To do so any other way would be chaotic and backwards.
