Is it safe to upgrade from 10.10 to 11.01 e-mail?

I use Opera 10.10 on Linux, including for e-mail. I have an 11.01 rpm and would like to upgrade, but am scared of a possible incompatability on the e-mail side which might mess them up. Can anyone comment on compatability (or not) of Opera's e-mail database during upgrades? Are there any critical version changes?
Yes, I *did* search the forums.

I think there have been database changes that mean you can't downgrade should something go wrong — but Opera should see the older database versions and upgrade them just fine. It's been fine for my copy on Windows.

Take backups, then upgrade; if something fails you have your backups, you can either downgrade or (ideally, older versions of Opera do have various known security flaws) manually import your old mailbox files.

Agreed. I ran into no trouble, but then I took the in between route with 10.50 and 10.60 (though if anything I think the upgrade to 11 should be smoother… why not go for 11.51 though?)

Thank you BtEO & Frenzy for your encouraging remarks.

I backup the entire .opera directory tree anyway, but it is only the email stuff I am concerned about.
But *this*
<< manually import your old mailbox files >>
intrigues me. Can you elaborate?

<< why not go for 11.51 though? >>
I have it now, and will.

Opera stores the emails themselves as standard (sort of) mbox format files under the /mail/store folder for each profile. If you have backups, and for some reason upgrading breaks something, you can take a clean install of Opera (or one where you've merely cleaned the mail portion) recreate your accounts, then import these mbox files from main menu-->Settings-->Import and export-->Import Mail… last time I did this though you had to manually tell Opera which account the mbox files in question were meant for and also tell it which messages are ones you've sent rather than received.

There are also more specific Import procedures that might do a better job, but as long as you have the mbox files it doesn't matter how corrupted the rest of the email system gets as you can still recover every email.

Thanks for this 'mbox' info, none of which I knew..
I upgraded direct to 11.51 (removing 10.10, installing 11.51, re-linking the previous .opera directory tree). After small worries due to slightly changed interface, things carried on OK. Great.
In fact there is a new problem whereby e-mail attachments no longer work: they get attached (& I believe sent) on creating a msg, but can never be viewed/opened in outbox, nor for received msgs - nor saved. I will do this as another thread - after searching the forum, of course.
So this thread is closed OK. Thanks for support.
