Can URLs be hyperlinks in Email?

Greetings,

Is it possible to make all URLs in emails be clickable hyperlinks rather than just text? I'm referring to both emails I type and emails I receive.

Thank you.

In plain text emails and plain text anything, you need to encase your URLs in < and > like this:

<http://example.com/>

(notice how even the forums here linkify it.)

See appendix C in <http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3986.txt> for more info. Even though is says you can also use quotes or by just separating the uri from other text with a space etc, < and > is best.

Good clients/programs will recognize this as a link and linkify it when presenting the received message to you.

For HTML messages, you need to insert an HTML link or add to the source and use markup like this:

<a href="http://example.com/">http://example.com/</a>

or

&lt;<a href="http://example.com/">http://example.com/</a>&gt;

For HTML messages, you may be able to type the literal:

<http://example.com/>

, but the receiving client might not linkify it like it would with a plain text message.

On a side, note that there's underline, bold, and italics like this:

_this is underlined_
*this is bold*
/this is italicized/

But, fewer clients will present those visually as underliend, bold and italicized.

There's also lists like this:

* item
* item
* item

or

1. item
2. item
3. item

or

1. item
    a. item
    b. item
2. item
    a. item
    b. item

etc.

And, don't for get smiley faces etc.

In other words, you can express a lot with just plain text.

I've recently started using Opera mail, and the fact that links aren't recognized if senders don't encase them in < > is a problem. This conversation thread is old, so maybe this has been remedied. Gmail recognizes links as do other email programs I've used. Has a solution been provided?

The encasing them in < > in plain text messages is good authoring. But, it's not a requirement.

The problem that Opera has is only with HTML messages where it doesn't turn link text (not an HTML link, that works fine) into a link (when reading or writing) for the user to click on. But, many clients have that problem too (more so with reading than writing). mail.google.com does linkify link text in HTML mails though.

Outlook, Gmail, and eM client all make links clickable (I just checked the same email in those three and in Opera). As robust a program as Opera is, I'm surprised that this hasn't been fixed. Another factor in settling on a client. Thanks for responding.

Things work fine for text/plain messages, so you just have to worry about HTML messages. For those, you just make sure you click "insert" and choose to insert a link. Then, there's no problem because the annoyance of having to use insert.

There's been a bit of confusion. You're talking about sending emails. I'm talking about ones received.

In text/plain messages that you receive, Opera linkifies URLs so you can click on them. That should just work.

For HTML messages that you receive, they should be clickable too as most other clients turn URLs you type into HTML links.

For HTML messages that were sent to you from an Opera user, those are the ones you have to worry about. But, if they use the insert menu, the links will be clickable for you.
