Keeping main window open after closing last tab
When I use Opera on Windows, closing the last tab leaves the window open on a speed dial page. On OS X, closing the last tab closes the window entirely. I prefer the Windows style of leaving the window open to a speed dial page. Can I duplicate this functionality in Opera/OS X? Having to either open a new window or a new tab before closing the previous is a minor annoyance, but still an annoyance.Be that as it may, I'm also a user, and I prefer the style used in other operating systems of keeping the window open to a speed dial page. Particularly since I have to move between Windows at work and Mac at home, so it would be nice if the software worked the same across platforms. I'm not asking to have the default changed, but for me this would be nice as an option. If I really wanted the whole window closed, I would click the red button in the corner, not the tab.
There is an AppleScript floating around on the forums (couldn’t find it when I went looking for it now, though) that sees if the Opera application is running but without any windows, and then opens a new window for you. It was only three or four lines long. Will do what you want here.
We may provide an option at a later time, seeing that we’ve had quite a few requests for this lately.

+1 for this. I'd like opera to behave the same way it does on window with "allow windows with no tabs" unchecked ... after closing the last tab in the last window, simply show the speed dial and done
Current behaviour is majorly annoying for me.

Well in order to maintain OSX general behavior, I think the best solution could be hiding the X button from the tab as long as there's only one tab opened. Why change the way OSX handles windows?

Any closed window can be reopened by selecting it in the Window menu>Closed tabs submenu. It's saved me a number of times after accidental closure before. New windows can of course be made by File>New Window (or Command+N).

This is the best idea, if any. Opera for Windows already does this (at least with a little option tweak). The current OSX behaviour is similar in the Windows version to enabling the 'Allow window with no tabs' checkbox in Preferences>Advanced>Tabs>Additional Tab Options. Perhaps if this option's backend function was changed, renamed to 'Hide close button on last tab', and disabled by default in the OSX version it may be the most consistent way of implementing this setting.
