New option for speed-dial (view style and categories for speed-dial)

Ive posted it into the Opera Dev Team Blog but somebody there show me the place to post it. Here is the original post i made:

"I would like to post an idea that i had but i dont know where to post it, so ill post it here. Sory Opera Team but its a good stuff (i think)..

I made a picture to show the idea. Its for the speed dial and it can makes speed dial more functional and nicier than it is now.

I uploaded the image and here is it:

Hope you like it and make it possible in future versions.

The idea is to have the speed dial divided into any number of areas we want and make it possible to separate the areas with colours, also make avaliable some options of buttons to add new sites to the respective areas in speed dial.

Sorry about my english and I realy hope to see it in Opera. It can make the usability more efficient and make Opera more elegant.

See ya."

This feature can be an option so we can turn it on or turn it off as the users like it or not.

Sorry about my bad english... From Brazil here.

It is easier to find speed dials entries when they are grouped together with similar entries.

+1 Your proposal looks fine. But I'd take any solution

I was going to request something similar, so I thought I would just post here.

My thought is to take it one step further and rather than have the category style you suggested (which could make the speed dial look rather congested/cluttered). Why not have speed dial tabs similar to browser tabs that would appear at the top of the browser window, below the address bar and bookmarks toolbar?

Each category would have it's own tab with any number of speed dials under each tab! It is basically a much cooler way to have your most important bookmarks visually available to you! You wouldn't even need to have actual tabs, just have a listing of categories to select from if need be.

Personally I hate the "standard" way of bookmarks. If you have a lot of bookmarks like I do, the current bookmark structure can make finding a specific bookmark quite tedious. This is even made more frustrating by the fact that the bookmark drop-down menu is so touchy. If you are looking for a bookmark through multiple folders and your cursor happens to drift or move off the current folder, you have to start the process of finding that bookmark all over again! Uhg!

My idea is to have all your bookmarks right within the speed-dial. The speed-dial tabs would be categories with each category holding the bookmarks you have in that category. If you have more bookmarks than can fit on the screen, you simply have a vertical of horizontal scroll bar that allows you to cycle through those bookmarks. You could even have a different wallpaper for each tab if you wish (related to each category if you'd like).

If you needed to cut down on the amount of memory Opera uses for these speed dials, you could have the option to list whichever sites you wanted as text only, similar to what Chrome does and walla! bigeyes

It's quite a pain to try to keep grouped columns as one little change makes you reorder every dial after the one you changed, even more, some layouts are not possible because you can't leave empty spaces.

It took me a while to get my (5,1)x3 layout, and I had to reassign shorcuts to remap them to the original 5x3 dial that I had (The 1x3 group it's just for informational dials (wheater, currency, ..), so it don't require a shortcut, and having it "separated" from the 5x3 group looks quite tidy, and keeps my old group as usable as before)

Yeah, I just thought about that today, and was thinking of telling Opera about it when I stumbled upon this thread.

I think this would be the best way, bookmarks are so messy and no picture of the site you're bookmarking.

The picture with the tab is the right way to go.
But, customizing the speed dial should be done individually for each tab.

If Opera comes out with this it would be even more awesome using this browser.

I can't understand why more people isn't using Opera as their browser, I mean, it's the best ;-)

Now we have one more idea..

The twho of then are great. I really like the suggestion by nForceFL. Maybe some option to show categories in tabs so we can manage then with our layouts and configurations?

The suggestion by nForceFL was exactly what I was suggesting. Sorry if wasn't clear enough in my explanation.

I can't understand why bookmarks still have yet to evolve from the old-school link-in-a-folder type of style! You think one of the browser developers would have moved on to something better by now.

floating icons on speed dial!!!! that would solve the problems of many people.
this way of adjusting rows and columns is a firefox addon thing, it's time to be more advanced ...
and not just the icons, but size, transparency, thumbnail ...

I agree with the above posts, I would like to be able to organize my speed dials by topic or group as I don't really ever use bookmarks unless I want to mark an actual page within a site and I don't care much about the rest of the site's content.

everyone knows how to manage icons on a windows desktop, so if the speed dial transforms to a windows like desktop, it will be easier for everyone to learn how to operate opera's speed dial. and one more thing: speed dial extensions need to be zoomed independently from icons, almost all of the extensions lack for space to show data.

Hello! I have a very long time using Opera, constantly working in the Express panel. Really want to have appeared in the Opera group that everyone can edit them by yourself. I think so Opera will become much more functional and more enjoyable.
Sorry for my clumsy English.
