It Could Only Happen In ________

Every country has its peculiarities. As one example, I'm guessing that the following type of video could only resonate in the United States. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Purloined from a so-called "foreign" cookbook.

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/365_foreign_dishes

27.—Milanese Vegetable Soup.

Cut bacon and ham into small pieces; put in a saucepan with 1 tablespoonful of hot butter. Add all kinds of vegetables, cut into very small pieces and let fry a few minutes. Then fill the pan with 1 quart of beef stock; let all cook slowly for half an hour; add some boiled rice and 1 cup of tomato-sauce and cook until done.

It is rather in the typical run-of-the-mill in American media political stuff so good luck with that fluffy, sugar. So it is nothing new for over there. It is not a style that resonates here. As I said in another thread, here political parties get a five minute airing on all tv channels but only if they have a minumum number of candidates in a General Election. They must be organised by the Party concerned and there are strict rules about content. In addition they are exceedingly well spaced out and tend to be around an election. There is no wholesale stuff from individuals or organisations nor anything allowed outside of the strictures (or Parties) laid down. So at UK level we would tend to get a 5 mins from Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, UK Independence. Nothing gung-ho and that is enough for most people who take little interest in them anyway.

Nah you are trying to be satirical to cover for the truth there Jaybro. You have no Welfare State and look at the state your place is in. Falling apart is the situation. Deeply divided and very flawed no matter the spin and bodyswerving. Talk about being blind to reality? We don't get all that stupid political ads on our tv thank you very much and going into controversial subject very often - crosswires and worse. She was talking about the talking points she was given to talk about. Yes, the American political system has devolved into a system where you only say what you are given to say and original thought's are likely to get you thrown out of your chosen party. You "Stay the course" and blindly repeat any "mantra" you are given no matter what...

And it was GB that spead trade around the world an international language, created the Commonwealth out of an Empire. America on the other hand took commercialism to the extreme. Everywhere it went it was followed by a phalanx of US big business. Just look at Iraq. There are legions of US private security folk (usually ex-soldiers). It is also happening now in Afghanistan for goodness sake. the same has happened in other countries. S. Vietnam which you were utterly incapable of keeping safe through incompetence was Americanised and look at that fiasco. Unlike your hamfisted military we fought Communist rebellions and extingusished them. Not bad for a small country like GB. And where any country is not too enamoured at your idea of "democracy" or "US culutre (titter) it gets either threatened or attacked. Seems the bigger you are the bigger a sewage farm you become.

And as you usually do fall back on fluffy humour you always have to be reminded that Scotland is NOT a sovereign country. And even if it was looking at the world's biggest superpower and the damn mess you are in over there we need no lessons from a woolly thinker about wee places. Considering you are made up of a bunch of States and all in a shambles you could be spending unlimited time yakking about those small paces without ever bothering to go outside looking for others!

Metacom Relates Indian Complaints about the English Settlers.

1675 Metacom or King Philip, leader of the Wampanoags near Plymouth colony, led many other Indians into a widespread revolt against the colonists of southern New England in 1675. The conflict had been brewing for some time over a set of longstanding grievances between Europeans and Indians. In that tense atmosphere, John Easton, Attorney General of the Rhode Island colony, met Philip in June of 1675 in an effort to negotiate a settlement. Easton recorded Philip’s complaints, including the steady loss of Wampanoag land to the Europeans; the English colonists’ growing herds of cattle and their destruction of Indian crops; and the unequal justice Indians received in the English courts. This meeting between Easton and Metacom proved futile, however, and the war (which became the bloodiest in U.S. history relative to the size of the population) began late that month.

From The Sydney Morning Herald, 1873
"The Arkansas Board of Supervisors met at Perryville to consider what the attorney at the local court, Mr. J. M. Matthews, had said about them in the local newspaper. Their resolution was that he was wrong and they should kill him. A group of about five, led by the former county clerk, entered the town, went to the courthouse, smashed it, and opened fire on Mr. Matthews, who returned fire. He was wounded but got away. That night about 150 supporters of Mr. Matthews took to the streets and killed a man. Mr. Mathews issued a series of warrants for the arrests of the perpetrators but, at the time of publication, they had not been served."

China orders cutback on TV entertainment

Originally posted by Reuters:

China will limit the number of entertainment programs allowed to air on television, from match-making game shows to dance broadcasts, and push to replace them with morality-building programing, Chinese media reported on Tuesday. China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television starting next year will restrict shows that "record the dark and gloomy side of society," the Southern Metropolis Daily said.

"For every satellite TV station, no more than two entertainment programs can be aired during prime time from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. every night," the paper said, citing a directive from the national broadcasting watchdog. Instead, the newspaper said, the extra time slots would be filled with programs that "promote harmony, health and mainstream culture."

The official Xinhua news agency said the directive aimed to guard against "excessive entertainment" by restricting game shows, talk shows, talents shows, and reality shows, among other types of programing.

Well now mjsmsprt37, I still smile at the tv adverts saying it was "made from girders". As for the coffee at McDonald's, they changed it here about four or five years ago advertising it was more natural or grounded or whatever. However I am not sure it was an improvement. Another thing I have noted is that Burger King seems to have declined here and has lesser outlets than used to. I don't drink too much coffee as I am mentally stimulated enough (!). I do hope that isn't why so many Americans drown in it?! lol

Men busted smuggling iPhones and iPads into China with zip lines, crossbows

To avoid paying taxes on expensive electronics, a group of Chinese smugglers attached thin cables to homemade slingshots and crossbows. Firing from the 21st floor of a high-rise complex in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China, projectiles were fired over the Sha Tau Kok river into a small village house in Northern Hong Kong. With both sides of the thin wire securely attached to buildings, the smuggling ring packaged iPads and iPhones into black and camouflage canvas tote bags. Under the cover of darkness, the criminals used a simple rope and pulley system to transport the goods from the Hong Kong home to the tall building in Shenzhen.

Each bag filled with electronics took about two minutes to transport across the river. However, it didn’t take police long to discover the actions of the smugglers and quickly move to capture the expensive goods as well as arrest the smugglers (video below). Around $46,000 worth of Apple iPads and iPhones were recovered from the smugglers and at least six men have been arrested in connection to the crime. If the smugglers had been successful, the Apple products could have been sold at a discount rate and avoided the taxation laws of Shenzhen, China as tax laws are more lenient in the Hong Kong markets.

The iPad 2 sells for about $499 at an Apple retail store in Hong Kong, but the official price in Shenzhen, China is about $572. In order to attract buyers, unauthorized retailers look for a sales price in between those two price points to move iPads off the shelf. Unauthorized dealers also like to use students living in Shenzhen to smuggle Apple products across the border when they attend school in Hong Kong. Some students even strap several iPhones to their waist and chest as well as avoid detection with baggy clothes. The news of this smuggling ring comes shortly after two fake Apple shops in southwestern China were ordered to shut down by authorities.

A 10 million people city and an 8 million people city separated by a small river. Also the only place I can think of (except in the time of West and East Berlin) where you can cross the border on a subway.

I don't think the underground metro lines were (re-)connected until after the unification. Right here in Antwerp one can cross the border between East-Flanders and Brabant by metro. Of course the difference is probably less profound, especially in pricing…

The concept is ok, but Apple's iteration is flawed.

You've got to be very happy about the following. Or should
I say elated?

"Sons and daughters of any future U.K. monarch will have equal right to the throne" under royalty succession reforms agreed to today by all 16 Commonwealth countries, the BBC reports.

And under the new rules, British kings and queens will no longer be banned from marrying Roman Catholics — though the rule barring a Catholic from becoming king or queen will remain.
