Opera Mini - How to Block Sockets

Howdy! Can someone point me to any info on how sockets works (ports, protocols etc) in Opera Mini? I need to block it on my network ASAP.

There's lots of posts and info advising on how to change the Protocol setting between Socket and HTTP, but not on how to prevent sockets from working.

I'm a school administrator, and some of our kids have been given iPad 2s. We set them up for http filtering, but Opera Mini has found its way onto them and kids now have unfiltered internet access in school, as the default setting is Socket! Obviously there are safeguarding issues here - we can't have kids looking at the bad stuff on the internet (in school, at least!).

I've tried capturing network traffic from an iPad 2 with Opera Mini on it using Wireshark, but it captures nothing but MDNS broadcasts on UDP 5353. How the hell does it work?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Opera Mini uses TCP connections to port 1080 in 'Socket' mode.

However, even if you allow HTTP only, your filters will not affect Opera Mini, as all communications are encrypted. Either you allow Mini or block it completely.

Thank you for the quick reply - you're a legend.
From what you're saying, I don't think we have a choice and may need to block it completely.
