How to close browser when last tab is closed
How do you automatically close Opera when the last tab is closed? i.e. closing the last tab (e.g. by clicking the X on the tab, using the "close" mouse gesture or a JavaScript close() command) won't bring up Speed Dial, a blank tab or an empty workspace but should shut down Opera. Obviously, it shouldn't shut down while other tabs are still open. Basically, I want Opera to mimic the behaviour of IE & Chrome.Not sure whether Opera has the capability to mimic either of those browsers in that particular fashion, but personally since Opera is neither IE nor Chrome (nor Firefox or whatever), I don't particularly want mimicry of either one of those you mentioned and that's one of the principal reasons for my being a long-time Opera user...
To shut Opera down at whatever point desired, even after closing all the open tabs, just click either the upper-right "X" or the upper left "O" then select "close". With the various shutdown issues that have been floating around, I usually choose the first method (seems a bit faster and more reliable).

Thanks jvance but at work we're looking for a secure browser (e.g. in kiosk mode) to deliver online tests. One of the requirements is that the browser should shut itself down after the last tab has been closed. Opera has every other feature we need. Previously we were using Firefox 3 but due to technology changes we can't use it anymore. I've personally been using Opera since version 6 and I love it. I can't see any security issues in having this feature, especially since it would need to be set explicitly by the user (or by us if we're supplying the test-specific environment and we can already force kiosk mode). It would be great if Opera Software ASA added such an option.
On a side note, you don't want all browsers to behave the same? Isn't that why the W3C exists? When I design a webpage I don't want to have to use browser specific or feature (bug?) specific hacks to give the same end user experience.
Also, I've been using computers long enough to know that clicking the "Close" icon will shut down a program...

Sorry -- maybe one of the higher-order tech wizards around here will be able to provide more relevant advice, but if it's a feature you'd really like to see included then I'd still suggest posting that description with some depth of what you'd like in the wish-list forum and wait to see if it matures into reality at some unknown future point.
I don't know... IE and Firefox seem to get away with it...
Seriously though, I know there are always many things to work on with a project of any decent size and the development team have to prioritise what they think is important, not us. Of course a good development team will take feedback from their users but there are always going to be issues that the users aren't aware of.
That said, more features please!

I agree with the original poster. Seems like such a simple option: "Close browser when closing last tab". Annoys me that every other browser I have does this (and I do use a lot of browsers for web testing) and Opera's the only one that has no option to allow me to do this. I don't want mimcry; I want options.
What's wrong with using the close button on the Opera Window?

I only can give you a workaround, but I think it's a good one.
change the keyboard-shortcut to the following:
CTRL+W --> Close page, 1 | close window
hope it fits your needs.

Please read the original post for the reasoning behind this question. JavaScript has no access to the close button (and it shouldn't, that would be a security risk). Close Self is fine, Close All is not.
Remember everybody, what's being asked for is NOT a change to the default behavior, but an extra option that can be turned on or off by the user (or Sys Admin). Not everybody will find it useful but in the case of my work's project it's a deal breaker. No auto-close, no Opera. We will have to use a different browser. If Opera wants more market share then it will have to provide more features to attract people away from the other browsers. If someone uses Opera and says "Opera doesn't have feature X that my old browser has, I'm changing back" then isn't this Opera's loss? Personally, I would probably never use this feature either way as I always have at least my email open in a tab.
Can anyone give an example where providing this option would be undesirable? Not "I don't like it" or "You can close Opera manually" but a genuine reason where letting people choose the behavior of the browser in this way would be bad.
