Opera crashes when I send an email
I have narrowed it down to something wrong with my installed version of Opera (11.51). I tried installing "next 12" and used "Stu's Opera Settings Tool" to transfer in my settings. Well 12 had the same problem, so I deleted it and reinstalled it but did not transfer things in, just setup the Opera email client and it worked fine. So the question for me to solve is where would the corrupt file causing this problem be. I will do a clean install of Opera 11.51 but I want to transfer back all my settings and saved emails. So what should I NOT transfer back? This is the help I am asking for.Michael

Your email messages are presumably fine, likewise the index ...
Any special changes to your account? Custom signature, have you edited accounts.ini to change the reply text, etc?
Is this an IMAP or POP3 account?
Oh, we do have a separate forum for Opera's mail client, this should really be there ...

I did not see the special forum for the email client I will post it there unless someone can move it there.
I have not edited accounts.ini, I do have a text based signature which I can remove and it is a POP. My mail server is gmail

The messages themselves are in the "store" folder, then there's indexer and lexicon ... autofilter contains the state of any learning filters. Then again, if you have to delete accounts.ini then the filters and indexes may be moot (I'm not completely sure).
Best bet of course is if you can get Opera to successfully import it, but that's the problem huh - can you? Second-best would be to export your mail (Received and Sent separately) from the crashing version, then create the account(s) and import the messages into the new install. (In that order - you have to create the accounts before importing messages.) If all else fails you can just import everything from your Store folder, but you'll lose all the filters and in fact whether messages were sent or received - not an ideal solution.

Use the "standalone installation" in the installer to install to a folder on your desktop. Close that Opera and replace its mail folder with a copy of yours. Then, start that Opera and see if you still get the problem. If you do, the problem is in the mail folder. If you don't, the problem is elsewhere in Opera's profile folder and you can just start with a new profile and replace its mail folder with a backup of yours and it should fix it.
But, if you don't want to wipe out the rest of the profile, you can try some things:
* Install Opera over the top of itself (upgrade to the same version) to repair any corrupt program files.
* While Opera is closed, delete autosave.win in the sessions folder.
* Set the toolbar and menu setups to "Opera Standard" in "Ctrl + F12 -> advanced -> toolbars". Then, recustomize your toolbars.
* Under "shift + F12 -> skins", make sure you're using the "opera standard" skin.
* Try sending a plain text message to to@example.com and see if Opera crashes.
* While Opera is closed, rename operaprefs.ini so that Opera creates a new one.
* While Opera is closed, delete the cache, opcache and temporary downloads folders.
* Open the "All Messages/Outbox" view. Click the view button on the mail toolbar above the message list, goto "show" and check "show sent". Then, delete any messages you see in the outbox view.
* Click the view button on the mail panel toolbar and reset the mail panel to defaults.
* In the account's properties, make sure you have a "mail address" set on the general tab.
(opera:about will show you the locations of things)
* Check things mentioned at <http://operawiki.info/SMTPProblems> just for good measure.
* Make sure no anti-virus/firewall is interfering with Opera. Disable the anti-virus email scanner it has one.
* See <http://operawiki.info/ImportFromBadMailFolder> for how to fix the mail folder (as best as you can if it's messed up really bad).

Burnout,
The problem is clearly in the mail folder. If I delete the mail folder and let Opera recreate it then NO problem. Or, if I just delete accounts.ini and recreate the accounts NO problem. But of course with either of these I have lost my emails. Could there be some instruction in accounts.ini which is causing the problem and could it be corrected. I could post accounts.ini if that is appropriate.

Issue resolved (well sort of)
The root cause of the problem was a ditsy Hard drive which I installed about a week ago. I had kind of suspected all was not right but chkdsk did not find any major problems until I tried to do a surface scan. After 10 hours it did not complete. I tried a different program to do a surface scan and after 6 hours did not complete. But, neither reported any problems. Then I downloaded Western Digital's testing program (the drive is a WD) and the quick scan came up with an error right away. I called WD for a little help and the drive is under warranty and they are going to replace it for free I only have to pay postage to send the old one back.
Anyway, I put the old drive back in, which still had all the data on it and all is well. Thanks to those who responded back with help I have learned from your encounters.

I had the same problem, the reason was, that in index.ini there was:
but in accounts.ini any account had Id=1000000046. And because of that Opera crashed during mail sending.
It was enough to remove these 2 sections (and lost much time to find the reason), in order to stop crashes. In my opinion these 2 sections remained after crash during account creating.
[Index 172] Name=Inbox Parent Id=1000000046 ... [Index 173] Name=Sent Parent Id=1000000046 ...

Opera 11 ; Ubuntu 10.04
After changing my e-mail accounts from POP Exchange to IMAP Gmail and back to POP Gmail, every time I tried to send an e-mail, Opera would crash. I had to quickly delete files from Outbox after re-starting Opera to avoid the crash. Like other posts in this forum I found that somehow my index.ini was corrupted. I traced this down to multiple Category entries for a single id (1000000029 below), also found an Inbox for this Id and a Sent folder for same Id, but no corresponding entry for the POP account (search on "Skin Image=Account POP" to find such accounts). I deleted all references (Categories, Inbox, Sent) for the stray Id, then Opera worked fine again. This allowed me to keep my 4500+ contacts and e-mail filters!!
See example text below for parts I deleted. I also re-indexed the e-mail accounts (i.e. the [Index ****] fields) to make the numbers sequential at the end of the index.ini file where the e-mail accounts are - don't know if this was necessary.
[Category 11]
unread=0
id=1000000029
open=0
visible=1
[Index 4571]
Name=Inbox
Id=800000058

Search End Date=0

I only see one with that ID in your example. Multiple indexes can have the same parent id if they're nested under the parent. Category 11 looks like a you@example.com POP access point and the 2 indexes look like the "Inbox" and "Sent" views under it. That should be O.K as long as the Category is still valid (as in, the POP account exists and that category is for the account).
