Works fine here too, Win XP Opera Next 12 build 1105, With a Logitech wireless laser mouse.

How do you know, LinuxMint7, that I use 'crappy 3rd party mouse software'?
If you've read and understood my original post you would know that zoom-by-scroll-wheel works in other programs [I specifically mentioned browsers] and has been working in Opera before build 1105 [deducable from my use of 'since']. Hence, 3rd party software doesn't matter in this case.
Build 1116, the zoom-by-scroll-wheel on GMaps still doesn't work.
