Adobe Acrobat X issue

Hi,

I have an issue with Adobe Acrobat X Pro integration. When I click on a PDF file in Opera, a popup dialog asks what to do:
1) open with Acrobat main program
2) open with Acrobat plugin (within browser)
3) save...

I'd like to open every file in Acrobat itself, in a separate program. There is an option "Remember choice...", but it does not work. It is grayed out, so I cannot put a checkmark in it. I have to select my preference each and every time.

I have already tried the following:

1) In Opera's Settings/Preferences/Downloads I tried to configure the application/pdf settings, but regardless what I choose, the problem persists.

2) Disabled the Acrobat plugin, the problem persists. Disabled plugins globally, no change either. Even if the plugin is disabled, the dialog appears and the plugin is a selectable choice. Checkbox is still grayed out.

3) In Acrobat's Preferences/Internet I disabled the option "Display PDF in browser". No change.

Please note that I have this issue with Adobe Acrobat X Pro, and NOT with Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader worked fine. Now it is uninstalled, only Acrobat is installed.

My system:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit version
Opera 11.51 b1087 32 bit version
Adobe Acrobat X Pro 10.0.3
Adobe plugin: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\Acrobat\Browser\nppdf32.dll

Several other users reported problems with Adobe Reader X so I guess there are problems with Adobe Acrobat Pro X too.

I recommend installing PDF-XChange and use that instead for reading PDF files. Its much faster than any version of Adobe Reader I have tested, its much smaller, and has more useful features. The plugin is independently customisable if anyone does want to use the browser plugin sometimes and the external reader for other tasks.

There are some indications that Opera Next has addressed some of these problems. I haven't installed Adobe Reader X, and still use Windows XP so I cannot confirm this.

What does that have to do with platform anyway. Adobe Reader X is Windows XP-compatible, by the way.

The problem which Opera Wahoo addresses is when you close a PDF, the active tab still displays the PDF for sometime, until you try minimizing/maximizing etc. the Opera window.
Windows 7 SP1 x86 edition and Windows XP Service Pack 3.
If you need any help from me with regards to Opera, please make a comment on any of my blog posts.

Hm, it seems that you usually suggest to use PDF-XChange, regardless of the problem... smile

In my case the point is that I want to use a PDF editor, and not a PDF reader. Adobe Reader works fine for me, the issue is only with Adobe Acrobat.

The biggest question for me is: why can't I enable the "Remember choice..." option in the dialog?

Maybe that's because it usually solves the problem. You didn't mention that you need to edit the PDF files.

You have not asked whether I need to edit the files or not... bigsmile

I clearly defined that the problem is with Adobe Acrobat, and not with Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader works fine. I assume that if anyone wants to use Acrobat instead of Adobe Reader it means that a simple PDF reader in not sufficient for him.

Anyway, thanks for the comment, but I would need a solution with this specific program, and not with a substitute.

Hi,

I am having the same problem with the "Remember choice and do not show dialog again" in relation to PDF files. I have gone though a similar set of diagnostic steps to jbaliko. Having done that, I decided to scan the forums and found this thread.

My situation is not 100% identical however. I do NOT run Adobe Reader X or Adobe Acrobat. Instead, I run a registered version of PDF-XChange Viewer.

My system runs Windows 7 (64-bit), Opera 11.51 build 1087 and PDF-Xchange Viewer v2.5 build 199.0.

I look forward to further suggestions.

The results I get vary depending on the site where the PDF link is posted.
This link on my own site (and many other links) open in the plugin without showing the dialogue, or open directly in the PDF viewer if that option is selected in Preferences, Downloads, application/pdf, open in default application.

Other links, on some forums, show the download dialogue, and the checkbox is greyed out.

So the answer may be, the problem is caused by the site sending the wrong MIME type and there's nothing you can do about it.

Yes, you are absolutely right, it depends on the site.

It was just a coincidence that the two sites that I used for testing were both problematic ones (i.e. likely sending wrong MIME type). I tried your own linked site and some others I have found, and Opera worked as expected: immediately opened the file in Acrobat.

Thanks for your help! yes
