Folder on desktop reappears every time I start Opera!!

I sent this to the Opera Bug team, but as you cannot get a reply from them, I thought I could post it here:

Summary: downloads folder won't be deleted from the desktop after I accidentally dragged it there (but removed afterwards)

Steps to reproduce
===================
1. delete duplicate download folder on desktop (or in Windows Explorer)
2. restart windows vista
3. restart opera browser - folder on desktop reappears!

Expected result
===============
Since I already have a working downloads folder under 'users' (which is correctly linked up in the Opera settings!), I expect to be able to delete the faulty 'doppelganger' folder on the desktop without it reappearing.

Actual result
=============
the doppelganger 'downloads' folder re-appears on the desktop (and in the Windows Explorer) every time I open Opera again, despite having the correct link in the settings.

See these two screenshots for more info:

Any help appreciated on this weird glitch.....

Is there a file in it? Are there any files in your Downloads tab which say they are in that folder?

No, there aren't any files in it.

The downloads files are all in the other, "real", downfolds folder.

It's only an empty folder that appears on the desktop every time I open Opera.

In preferences, advanced, downloads, choose another downloads folder, then close Opera and delete the desktop folder. Restart Opera.

Thanks, Pesala, but that's actually one of the first things I tried.

Opera is set with the correct downloads folder, i.e.

c:\users\tj\downloads

However, the "fake" downloads folder that appears on the desktop every time I open Opera must be set to c:\users\tj\desktop\downloads somewhere, but I can't find it.

Do you think the problem would be solved if I uninstalled the entire browser and then re-installled it again?

The browser itself would make no difference. Deleting your profile might

Go to (menu) > Help > About Opera. Look for "Opera directory", and especially "Preferences". Deleting the Preferences file (operaprefs.ini) is likely to solve the problem, if not then delete the entire Opera directory (in older versions the directory itself was named "profile", we still refer to it that way).

Thank you.

I tried deleting the preferences file that you talked about, but that didn't help.

Which Opera directory is the one I should be deleting? The one that holds the aforementioned operaprefs.ini?

In desperation, I uninstalled the whole Opera browser.

But what do you know, when I downloaded it and installed it again, there the bloody thing popped up on the desktop again!!

Something is seriously wrong here. How can the error still appear when I've deleted and installed the whole damn browser all over again?

By the way, I tried to delete the whole Opera directory as suggested above, i.e.:

C:\Users\TJ\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera\operaprefs.ini

...but that didn't help. It just re-set the settings inside the browser itself.

Perhaps run a scan on your computer for potential malware/rootkits? That sounds like a behaviour that is more than just Opera. If you install and use other browsers, does the same thing occur?

Did you look into the other user accounts? In XP (you seem to use a later version) there are other default accounts, e.g. "Administrator", "Default User" etc. There should also be an "All Users" account with a desktop folder. Items in this folder appear on each user's desktop, so in this case it wouldn't matter if you delete your pesky download folder from your desktop - it will be back the next time you start Windows. You should log on as an administrator and check the desktop folders of the other user accounts (with Windows Explorer).

It doesn't appear when I start Windows. It only appears when I start Opera. There doesn't seem to be anything in the other accounts to suggest this error either (i.e. no 'downloads' folder in the 'All Users' account's desktop folder either).

I just downloaded Mozilla Firefox, and thankfully this doesn't behave the same way.

What a mystery!

I actually had the same problem (although the folder coming up on my desktop was a public document folder), and it seems to have resolved itself after I disabled the public folder sharings in the advanced sharing settings in the Network and Sharing Center. I'm not sure if it'll solve your problem, but I think it's worth a shot if you can bear to disable the sharing folders.

It sounds like you're using Firefox now, though. Oh well, aha.
