After Editing Signature All Threads I have Posted in are Blank

I reported a problem with ABBR code in this thread, and after following the suggestion made by Tamil, I could no longer read any thread that I had posted in. This is how the threads look to me:

Could a moderator please delete my signature for my original account: Pesala?

The abbreviation code in my signature was formerly like this:
[abbr title="After copying the link from the » icon, strip the part after # up to and including the | pipe, and add spaces between the words in the addresss."]Opera Config Links[/abbr]

I edited it and changed it to this:
[abbr="After copying the link from the » icon, strip the part after # up to and including the | pipe, and add spaces between the words in the addresss."]Opera Config Links[/abbr]

This seems to have borked any thread on the forums in which I have posted, which is a lot of threads!

I had to register with this new account to regain access to the forums to report the problem. Even using this new account all previous threads I posted in are blank.

I recall that we had similar problems once before, where certain pages of some threads where blank and could not be accessed. Its not good that some simple HTML code in a signature can do so much damage.

The link to Pesala's about page doesn't work either so I don't know how anyone is going to edit my signature.

If you want to find the borked threads, see Pesala's Active Topics

Can't you re-edit your sig? Too late, huh? If you had edited it while it was still in your cache you might have been able to change it.

Mere moderators like me can't edit anything about a user - only forum posts (and blog posts to "community" blogs).

One of the webmasters and/or community managers (that is, someone with actual access to the server) could certainly clear your sig, but otherwise ...

Hmm... I don't know of a way to find out who's actually on duty in Oslo right now.

I cannot log in with my original username and email — all I get is a blank page like that in the first post.

I've tried to PM a couple of people I know there ... the community managers probably aren't available this time of day, the only one I know who usually would be is Stein, but I have no idea what his actual schedule is. So I messaged him and brianj, if Stein isn't around you may have to wait until their "regular business hours". sad

Forum Settings isn't even part of the account necessarily ... if he can log in with his original ID then he could just click here. But if the server can't process his sig, then the page will be blank ...

This is all I see if I "log in" with my original account after logging out of the current account.

From there, I cannot go to the Forum Settings link because I am not logged in.

I have tried everything I can think of to fix this. I must rest now. Hopefully, someone at Opera can fix it.

Robertj says he has forwarded the message to nicomen, but he doesn't expect an immediate fix - sometime tomorrow (their time). Mind you, it's 10 PM their time, but presumably he's meaning about 6 AM their time and not just midnight their time ... sad

Wrong. You can't access any thread Pesala has posted in. Simple as that.

20. October 2011, 05:19:41

Would like to verify that I, too, only see blank threads similar to what Pesala was describing when I currently check out Pesala's Active Topics. Since he has posted in a lot of threads, this affects a lot of threads I regularly check out (and link to, to other people). Any updates on the fix?

Also I don't know if this is related to this issue but html tags that were previously not there have appeared in my signature.

The problem was caused by the recent My Opera update. It broke the abbreviation tags in my signature, and on trying to fix that, my signature broke every thread I had posted in.

I have created This thread in the test forum to try to diagnose the problem. Any HTML expert help would be welcome.

Confirmed the bug. When I edit the code and post it, the thread become blanked out. This code is OK:
[abbr title="After copying the link from the » icon, strip the part after # up to and including the | pipe, and add spaces between the words in the addresss."]Opera Config Links[/abbr]

But this code blanks out the entire thread.
[abbr="After copying the link from the » icon, strip the part after # up to and including the | pipe, and add spaces between the words in the addresss."]Opera Config Links[/abbr]

See my post in that thread. No quotes, and no "title".

PS: Note ... when any of us tries to view your About page, the title bar still shows "Login" (even though we are logged in). I'd try the Forum Settings again - or at least read this thread. If it still says "Login" when you're in this thread, then don't bother.

OK. Lets try with no quotes and no title:

[abbr=After copying the link from the » icon, strip the part after # up to and including the | pipe, and add spaces between the words in the addresss.]Opera Config Links[/abbr]

Opera Config Links

That works, but its not what the WC3 schools says is the correct syntax:
The <abbr title="World Health Organization">WHO</abbr> was founded in 1948.

After editing my entire signature in the same way to remove the "Title" and the quote marks, the thread is again broken. So there still seems to be a parsing error with the My Opera forum code, which was not there before. I have been using this signature and editing it to make minor updates for a very long time.

Thank you for fixing it. I shall try not to break it again. I will leave out the abbreviation tags for now and test any updates again in the Test Forum thread before modifying my signature in future.

It shouldn't be necessary, this was an unfortunate bug with the BBcode parser.

I think not. I was thrown by what the parser did to my signature BBcode — adding " title" after "Abbr"

It was not a lot of fun, but I have seen this issue before, so I didn't lose any sleep over it. The different forms of BBcode used on different forums often lead to unexpected results. I use it so often that I have some shortcuts for pasting code, but they don't work everywhere. The desktop team blog doesn't accept coloured text for example.

I'm assuming I'm having the same problem, but if so, it has nothing to do with my signature or my having posted in a thread, since in my case:

(1) I have no signature line (and never have)

(2) I can access some threads where I have posted but not others (in fact, for at least an hour I couldn't access the following thread, but now I can):
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=913741

(3) I can access some threads where I have not posted, but not others (for example, I cannot access the following threads):
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=265206
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1126142
http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=292368

Ironically, other than the one thread I had tried to access for over an hour, I began to notice this while I was scanning the Opera Browser forum looking for a Pesala post to check something in his sig line (...and it may be that all 3 examples I can't access above have a last post from Pesala).

So once I got to this thread I thought, given the ubiquity of Pesala's posts, that perhaps all the threads I've been unable to access contain Pesala posts (and therefore, Pesala sig lines). But now that I can access the the first one I mentioned above (that I couldn't access for over an hour but now can access) I notice that it doesn't contain a Pesala post.

From what I can tell so far, it seems completely random which threads I can/cannot access.

confused

yes Checking in a little late, but AFAICT it's all fixed!! I can now access all the threads I mentioned above and all the others I had since made notes on.

Thanks for taking care of it so quickly!up

Yes, it seems you were correct.

What was misleading/confusing was that I was trying to access the first thread I mentioned (containing no Pesala posts) for over an hour before I started hitting all the inaccessible threads containing Pesala posts with the same result. Then for some reason the problem with that thread went away and I could access it and see that it contains no Pesala posts. So I thought it must not be limited threads containing Pesala posts.

I'm still puzzled why I couldn't access that one thread and wondering if it was somehow related to the BBcode parser issue or... ???

...Now if I could only remember what it was I was wanting to check in your sig line when I was trying to access any one of your posts earlier. p
