How Does Unite Work?
I've been showing off to my Chrome and Firefox friends by sending unite links instead of email attachments. However, when pressed, I wasn't sure how it all worked.
I read the intro, but it glossed over things or I didn't quite understand it.
How do other peoples browsers resolve the address
http://pc.opticyclic.operaunite.com/file_sharing/
i.e. how does the DNS lookup find it if it is just on my PC?
Once it has found it, how does the transfer take place?
Is it a direct connect from my PC to theirs or does it route via the Opera servers?
Your machine notifies the OperaUnite.com service about your systems IP address. Transfers are direct peer-to-peer as long as this is supported. If your router does not allow UPnP to configure it automatically, the connection will fallback to being proxied through the OperaUnite.com service. You can check your status from Unite: Show Status.
If you want to manually configure port forwarding in your router (refer to the manual or supplier’s Web site) the port used by Opera Unite is 8840. You can then access it using the domain provided by the OperaUnite.com service, or directly using http://your-ip-address:8840/file_sharing/
