[1116] White Text on Black Fringing

Since 1105 I see this with pages having white text on black/very dark blue background:

*

There some fringing, visible as blue shadows.

*Check it out on http://www.thedigitalbits.com, all pages featuring white text. I've ssen it on many other sites, too.

Do you have an LCD display?

"subpixel hinting" is a method where they actually track fractions of a pixel and use it for anti-aliasing. A screen pixel actually consists of 3 different colors placed next to each other (red, green, and blue) and so they may use these subpixels for fractions of a pixel. You can disable this feature in Windows itself if you find it annoying, though.

ClearType in Windows is by default optimized for CRT, not LCD. Change your ClearType settings or disable it.

Yes LCDs. ClearType was created for LCDs, and I have set it accordingly [with the tool W7 comes with]. Windows resolution for both monitors is set to the native res of both Eizos respectively. I also use colour management and have calibrated the displays.

But both of these have no bearing upon what I observe, to wit, the fringing happens only in Opera - not Firefox, Chrome, IE 9 [32 and 64], or any other program. It also happens only with Opera 12 since build 1105, it did not happen in previous builds. This does not mean it is a bug, it also does not mean it can't be anything specific to my system.

PS: Radeon HD 6800 with current release [not beta] 11.9 driver.

On the page you quoted I see no fringing on the text.

However I see lots of blue vertical lines on the left of the page away from the text - is this supposed to happen? I assume it is, as it occurs in IE 9.0.8112.16421 64 bit too.

I'm using Windows Seven Ultimate, Opera Next 12.00 build 1155, Acer AL2023 (20" non-widescreen LCD [I hate widescreen on computers, widescreen is for television]).

Have you run through the cleartype tuner in Windows 7? Does text look ok while you're doing the tests?
