Remove the toolbar on the F4 panels?

When viewing the Bookmarks panel, a drop-down menu titled "Bookmarks " is visible at the top of the panel that enables you to select whichever panel you want. This functionality is duplicated by the panel toolbar (iconbar?) on the left of the panel. Can this toolbar be removed so I can use only the drop-down menu and get some screen real estate back?

Wow, thank you. I'd have sworn I tried that, and it didn't work!

You might have tried in panels instead of toolbars.
