There was a log in problem yesterday. I was also affected and couldn't post for a while. The problem is now fixed so your friend should be able to log in and post now.

I'm not an expert on this kind of trouble shoot but I've seen the cases where upgrade created a new Opera profile elsewhere. If that's the case, your friend's original Opera profile may still be somewhere intact. Try searching for Opera folder or Opera specific files in your/his drive and see if he/you can find another profile other than the current emply one. That's all I can say without knowing his OS, location and type of his Opera installation, and such information.

As mimi_s_mum has explained, there were log-in problems yesterday at Opera's servers. These may have caused the "connection" messages you saw.

Opera is not supposed to remove history, favorites, speed dial, and other files when it updates. But there are several things that can go wrong with that plan. Sometimes Opera puts its data files into a different-named folder that they were in before the update. In that case, Opera creates new default "personal" files there which won't contain your old personal data. If this happens, you can use your operating system to Search for the old files, then copy them into the new Opera folder. Try searching first for bookmarks.adr (the bookmarks file), and see if there are two or more copies on the computer. If there are only two, the largest one is probably the old file with your personal data in it. The smallest one will be Opera's new default file. If there are more than two file versions, you probably have multiple user accounts or have made backup file copies in the past. Your other old data files (favorites, speed dial, etc) will probably be in the same folder as was the old bookmarks.adr file. Always turn off Opera before copying data files into its folders.

However, sometimes Opera may write new data file versions over top of the old files and destroy the old data. Usually this is because something has become damaged in the old files, and they are unrecognized by Opera. This normally means the data in the original files has been lost, unless you have backup file copies made earlier. It is always wise to backup the important files on any computer frequently, since computers and software have many ways to destroy files. This is a good example of why.

If you are using a newer Windows version, one last thing to try is to locate the new bookmarks.adr file using the file Explorer. Right-click the file and select Properties. Click on the Previous Versions tab. You may have to wait while Windows searches. If there are any file backups that were made in the past using Windows Backup or System Restore, they will appear in the panel. You may be able to find a version stored before the file data was lost.
Opera 12.14u (1738), 11.52 (1100) & 10.63 (3576) running on various Windows systems from Win7-64 down through KernelEx4-modified Win98FE (proof that reports of Win98's demise are greatly exaggerated).

Note that when you search you will have to check the setting to include hidden files and folders - the folder where your settings are stored is usually in One of Windows' hidden folders.
