If you're running Windows 7 you can restore it like this as long as System Restore is turned on: -

1. Make sure Opera is closed and browse to C:\Users\(Your User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Opera.

2. Make a backup of bookmarks.adr to another folder somewhere, just in case.

3. Right-click bookmarks.adr in the Opera folder and choose Properties, then click on the Previous Versions tab. When it's done searching for previous versions, select the newest version that's available before you updated Opera and hit the "Restore..." button.

That will restore just the bookmarks.adr file from System Restore. As you selected the most recent version available from before you updated Opera, it should restore some - if not all - of your missing bookmarks.

I always keep a backup of the following files, just in case: -

bookmarks.adr (all of your bookmarks)
cookies4.dat (cookies)
search.ini (search settings)
speeddial.ini (Speed Dial settings)
urlfilter.ini (when you block ads and other items, the info is stored in this file)
wand.dat (all of your saved logins and passwords)

If an Opera upgrade wipes out any of those settings, you can restore them just by copying over the respective file(s) from your backup. While some people here try and always blame this stuff on the user, I've also had Opera wipe out all of my settings just by saying "yes" to an automatic upgrade, so I don't see how that is my fault and not the fault of the software and therefore it's always wise to keep a backup.
