More cross browser keyboard shortcut compatibility

Ctrl+Shift+Del - should bring on a "Delete private data" dialog, like it does in IE and Firefox.

Ctrl+PgDwn / Ctrl+PgUp - should switch tabs, like it does in Chrome and Firefox. (This should replace Ctrl+F6 and Shift+Ctrl+F6, which do it now).

Since you can create whatever custom shortcuts you want, I don't see the point of this. All it would do is alienate existing users who are used to the current shortcuts.

Ctrl+Shift+Del is not used by any shortcut in opera, and there is no shortcut to bring out the "delete private data dialog".
Of course you can dial "Alt, i, d" - but thats three clicks instead of one.

-1, why remove functionality that people already are used to?

Its quite strange for me that anyone uses those clumsy, hard to reach buttons to do such a simple tacks like switching tabs. i use single key shortcuts "1" and "2", (and "4", when we speak about them). But in that case - its even more obvious that they have to change. F6 is located so far at keyboard, while PgDwn is the lowest of "edit" buttons, so its much easier to reach. Also, you can press Ctrl+PgDwn wuth one hand, while for Ctrl+F6 you need two hands.

Perfect, so roll your own!

there is no shortcut to bring out the "delete private data dialog".

but Opera contains a command (aka "action") just in case someone wants to trigger this dialog with a shortcut.: "Delete private data"

@c69, people have got used to old shortcuts and I like the default shortcuts better than what you say.
And for Delete Private Data shortcut, you can specifically ask for "Configurable Keyboard for Delete Private Data". Why this general topic when you talk about Delete Private Data specifically.
Windows 7 SP1 x86 edition and Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Personally, I've configured the short-cuts described by c69 for my installation. Since I use multiple browsers all the time, I find it easier to have consistent keyboard controls.

However, for users who've migrated from other browsers and are new to Opera, having popular shortcuts as default will make it easier for them. I know that it's not very difficult to create a keyboard short-cut binding, but I can't see casual users go through the additional trouble of configuring such things.

Ctrl PageDown/PageUp in IE8 go to the bottom/top of the current page. Ctrl F6/ Shift do nothing.

I see no great harm in adding the Ctrl Shift Delete shortcut for Delete private data. Its not going to affect users like me who have defined their own shortcuts.

So then the default Opera shortcuts of 1 and 2 are surely much better than either?

Idea is not to help me. Idea is that its good for Opera to adopt those de-facto UI standards, which are better than opera's current own implementation.

Default ? Dude, they are not default, since opera 9.23, i think. ( When single key shortcuts were disabled by deafult ).

Nope. Ctrl PgDown/Up in IE is equal to PageDown / Up. They both just scroll by one page.

Same with switching tabs.
It will remove "scroll page left / right" functionality .. but i dont think any significant number of people need it.

------
Also, i hope Opera has usage stats, that can show - how many people ever used Ctrl+F6, how many do that on daily basis, and how many people from those who have single key shortcuts enabled - uses "1" and "2" keys, and how often.

That seals it then. It should not change the existing shortcuts of scroll left/right — who knows how many users make use of these shortcuts or F6? If its only 1% then its a significant number.

If PageDown/Up scroll up/down then Ctrl PageDown/Up is a reasonable choice for scroll left/right. There is no advantage to breaking that.

Personally, I have always used Ctrl Tab, Ctrl Shift Tab to switch tabs, which are used by other programs that I use.

Me too. And this works in FF, Chrome, Safari, IE also.

+1 for Ctrl + Shift + Delete. You against it: you have no point, adding this new shortcut wouldn't affect anyone and would be there for the better. All other browsers have this as the default shortcut for deleting private data.

About Ctrl + Page Up/Down: Excel switch between sheets with it (person asking for it recently and explaining). But since this shortcut already does something else more important in Opera (plus everyone already do use (Ctrl +) Shift + TAB which only requires one hand to perform and there's already an option to customize if you want) then it shouldn't be touched.

Ctrl+PgDwn / Ctrl+PgUp - should switch tabs

These are "standard" keys for switching tabs, and opera doesn't use them yet, and as a result, I have no idea what keyboard shortcut it uses for switching tabs, since it doesn't (to me) have any.

It seems you haven't checked, neither tested, nor have read the topic. Opera use them for horizontal scrolling.

Oops, seems they just didn't do anything on the page I tested them on.
To me, though, not using 'standard' or (in this case, semi-standard) key combinations is just one more barrier to entry to those trying out opera.

It really isn't a standard, nor semi-standard shortcut. It does the same as Page Up/Down in IE7. It just happens to be the shortcut used by Firefox and Chrome, or maybe by other browsers that you have used.

Ctrl Tab is a standard shortcut for switching tabs. Alt Tab is a standard shortcut for switching windows.

Where shortcuts do not conflict with existing shortcuts used by Opera, like the Ctrl Shift Del shortcut suggested, there is a case for adding them, but where they conflict with existing standard shortcuts (for Opera), they should not be implemented (never say "never"). It really annoys long-term users — new users should learn how to use Opera. It is very easy to customise shortcuts any way that you want.
