Why not let people sign up without giving any contact info?

From what I understand the official explanation is that an existing email address (and later also a phone number) is used for recovering the password. But this also raises privacy concerns to some people.

In addition to the password recovery, e-mail/sms validation of new users helps us limit the number of spam signups. After signup you can remove the data if you really don't want it stored permanently by Opera.
