The meaning of socks proxy in Opera

When browsing and using the Opera feature for proxy servers in Advanced. I use a proxy, that isn't a socks proxy to the best of my knowledge, in the HTTP, HTTPS and FTP forms. And it works fine.

However, when I introduce that same proxy into the SOCKS form, my browser won't even load the home page, it won't even load the pop up for me to write the proxy's username and password.

Initially I thought that by leaving SOCKS empty, I might be leaving a tunnel under the proxy connections in my other three form entries.

But then, I am starting to realise SOCKS are probably configured in a different manner, perhaps none of them by definition can be port 80. So that's why the browser is brought down to a standstill.

Is it my second intuition?

Thank you.
