Ignore contact doesn't work with labels
I have some contacts ignored in newsgroups, which marks them read and puts a no entry sign on them. This is fine. But, I also made a label called "replies to me" which shows any messages with my name in the message body (ie. replies to me, as people prefix the message with "name wrote").
Now if an ignored contact replies to me, they appear as unread in this label. Why? Can I change the order in which these two things are done?

Even if the "ignore contact" code runs last and marks the message as read automatically, the entry in the label should be marked as read too (since it's the same message underneath).
It's either a bug or the designer figured that since you have it in a label, you really don't want to ignore it as far as marking it as read automatically. I can ask.

Yes, ask please.
Result: It doesn't sound like intended behavior. Filing a bug with exact steps (not a general explanation) and details about the label (if the options matter) would help.

Or suggest a way round it if you can.
You can try these things to workaround it and or to investigate further:
Create a new label with the same rules as the other label and transfer any message in it over to the new label and then delete the old label. That should show whether it's an index order issue (with as far as the rule ares executed).
Or, create a new label that matches that contact and set it to "mark as read". Then, hide this label.
Or, take note of what messages are unread in the label. Then, set its option to 'mark as read", ok out and then go back in and uncheck it, just to see if that matters.
It's also be good to know if you can reproduce with a standalone installation with a fresh mail folder (with the label created first and then the ignoring of the contact or vice versa).

I tried to reproduce this problem with the latest build at <http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/> with my mail folder and could not. Doesn't matter if I ignore the contact before or after I create the label with a from rule containing the address.
I didn't realise there was a version 12 beta out, I'll use that when I set up my new PC in about a week (awaiting some parts - I've been hunting around to get discount bits). This one is running Vista and I wanted to give Seven a go, but it's a lot easier with a separate machine than risking messing up this one.

Well, it's a snapshot, note quite a beta.

Would you advise me against using it?
With that build, I have hardware acceleration and webgl disable and it works fine with mail and everything. But, I use all IMAP accounts, have my contacts backed up, my feeds list backed up, and don't care if I lose my already-fetched feeds. I don't care if I lose my labels (only have 3 and only 1 has a rule and it's a single rule) or customizations or anything.
So, if I have to start over with a new mail folder or use a stable build with a new mail folder, it's super easy with no hassle (do it all the time). And, my labels (minus rules) will be recreated if needed anyway as I use IMAP keywords.
For you, I don't think you're in the same situation if you use newsgroups, POP and make use of labels and rules a lot. If something goes wrong, it's a lot of work to fix and you won't be able to fix it fully and just downgrading may not help at all. (Always backup your mail folder before upgrading anyway just in case you want to downgrade after upgrading to a new version of Opera that makes changes to the mail files that are not supported in previous versions).
So for you, you should only test it in a standalone installation with a new mail folder with test accounts (like IMAP with your mail.opera.com account).
While we're on the subject of mail. When I set up my new PC, is everything contained in my mail folder? Can I just install Opera on the new machine, then close Opera and copy the mail folder from the old machine over the top of the new machine's mail folder? What about other settings and bookmarks and so forth? I'd prefer not to have to set up anything in Opera, and just have it exactly as it was.

Just makes sure you use the same program files folder name for Opera when you install (the default is "Opera").
