Exlude mail account from checking automatic - Only check manually
There is an option for every account to:"Include this account when checking manually"
There should also be an option just to check an account manually (e.g. when awaiting mail on a spamfull account)
So give us a checkbox
Check account:
O only manually O every xx Minutes O both
there is a "check for new messages every [...] minutes" checkbox ... disabling that should do the trick.
All my posts only represent my own opinions.

Yes, I also thought it should. But it doesn't!?
It works for me. But, if you're using IMAP and your IMAP server supports IDLE, you might have to disable IDLE too. To do that, close down Opera and edit accounts.ini in the mail folder. Under the section for the IMAP account, set "IMAP IDLE Support" to 0.
Also, if you click on an IMAP folder view under the you@example.com IMAP folder access point, Opera might connect, select the folder and fetch mail that's in it.
Ah, ok. Thanks a lot for the information how to do it.
I do have some IMAP accounts in my list.
So I will give it a try.
But shouldn't it work without editing an ini-file?

Most IMAP users just use the defaults of checking every 10 minutes and don't even know what IDLE is and just know they get their messages right away. So, turning off automatic checking is not something that most users try to do.
With that said, I'd love to have the IDLE setting (and a million others settings) in the UI. But, Opera has to keep the settings dialog somewhat clean.
Once you disable IDLE to see if it helps, you might want to make a wish in the wish-list forum to have the IDLE setting in the UI. Or, you might suggest that IDLE gets totally disabled if you uncheck "check every...". I'd prefer just a setting for IDLE.
