I'm looking for the same answer.
My added search engine appears and works fine, but i don't see any way to add his favicon.
There are many "search.ini" files in Opera folders, so I have try to add a line ( favicons URL) in every of those "search.ini" files which contains my added search engine...
with no success
Opera 11.52 - Build 1100
Windows XP (32 bit)

%localappdata%/opera/opera/icons
and i ve found that on my Opera 11.64 (installed on Windows 7 64 bit), no matter what these icons will always remain:
http%3A%2F%2Fredir.opera.com%2Ffavicons%2Famazon%2Ffavicon.png
http%3A%2F%2Fredir.opera.com%2Ffavicons%2Fbing%2Ffavicon.png

http%3A%2F%2Fredir.opera.com%2Ffavicons%2Fwikipedia%2Ffavicon.png
http%3A%2F%2Fredir.opera.com%2Ffavicons%2Fyahoo%2Ffavicon.png
even if i add say Youtube or Google Images as alternative search engines... BTW as soon as you add a new search engine an icon is created for it, but the moment you delete private data, whoosh! it is gone
hope this helps... hope Opera does something about it... moderators - assistance required
