Opera Mini 6.5 for Symbian/S60

Release! party

Opera Mini 6.5 for Symbian/S60 has now left the Opera building!

If you want to know why you should download it, take a look at the changelog:
  • Crash logger: all crashes will now be reported to Opera (not supported on S60 2nd Edition phones) so we can work on preventing more crashes
  • Access to your system bookmarks through browser UI
  • New setting to enable system status bar (not supported on S60 2nd Edition phones): you get instant access to notification pane on your Symbian Belle device
  • Lower data usage with WebP image format (not supported on S60 2nd Edition phones)
  • Support for more languages in browser UI (17 (!) new languages added)
  • HTTP/Socket setting is back bigsmile
  • Sharing pages through e-mail
  • Check how much data traffic you saved using Opera Mini on "Data Usage" page
  • Bookmark your favorite pages easily with a star in URL address field

To get hold of this great version, go to http://m.opera.com on your phone or http://www.opera.com/mobile/download/versions/ from your PC.

Edited at 16:50 CET: If you already downloaded Opera Mini, and have a Sony Ericsson device, please download again, as we just fixed a small bug. smile

Please keep the general feedback in this thread, as it makes our lives sooo much easier! yes

And don't forget to report bugs in the bug report wizard

Thanks, and enjoy!

The Opera Mini Symbian/S60 team

I wonder if this mini 6.5 does not work with N95 8gb since it always returns error when I try to upgrade. Now it runs mini 5.1
Any ideas?

If you run native Mini 5.1 Beta (or Beta2) you need to deinstall old version first. Problem is caused by application name change between 5.1 and 6.0 which is poorly handled by old S60 platform versions (S60 3.1).

Hi. I installed mini 6.5 into Nokia C6-01 (Anna).
When to start, font information dialog appears,
and system restarts...

Anyone also happens?

In this line of thought: is it safe to upgrade from 6.1 to this (6.5) on my E51? Will my bookmarks, speed dial and settings be kept?

Not sure about this one. On my N8 scrolling is way to sensitive. It's hard now to hold a finger on a link without moving the whole page. Rolling back to 6.1 because it's way better.

I don't really understand your question. Google is still the default search engine. It only uses yandex search suggestion.

Is it the intended behaviour of Opera Mini that if I select and use another search engine other than Google, the selection is not remembered and the search engine returns to Google upon restart?

I would like the option to select my own default search engine and for it to remain so after I close and restart Opera Mini.

i had no problems with my upgrade from mini 6.1 to 6.5.(my mobile is nokia E71-2) It kept all my settings, saved pages, speed dials, and even the search engines i added as well. Same for opera mobile 11.5, so id say you'll be ok to update. Keep up the good work Opera.

Yes it's the intended behavior...
I'd like to have the ability to change the default search engine as a separated option too.

1. Generally working Great on usa Nokia nuron 5230 under both latest versions of opera mini and mobile with Swype!
2. Still no time in status bar when shown. Still need to exit our switch out of opera to check the current time.
3. No session time or total time online under the bandwidth savings page. If opera browser is keeping stats, might want to add time tracking, too.
4. Status bar, when activated, only shows up in portrait mode. Never appears in landscape mode.

Otherwise, no problems thus far and a great update.

You should be able to add a new search engine (long press on google search field to get this command), but there is an issue with search engine management currently - please keep track of updates.

Something strange is happening. We're looking into it. Any chance you could download the file from http://m.operamini.com/OperaMini.sis?act=dl&tag=mini5s60 and transfer it via bluetooth? That worked for me, at least.

Can you please report a bug through mini bug wizard with link to files that constantly fail for you. Would be useful if you could provide the following info in the report: connection type (2G/3G/WiFi), your mobile operator and country.

Using inline edit, when in a text field opera acts like it doesn't know a key has been released. Mostly capitals and punctuation marks. For instance the colon becomes :::::::::::::: until stopped by another key.
This has happened across platforms (Java & Symbian S60v3) and over 4 units (2 Nokia, LG, Pantech) with all v's of Mini since 4.2.

Also, the bug report did not confirm that the report was sent. sad

Any chance we can see the 'Go to top' and 'Go to bottom' shortcuts again (like in Opera Mini 4.x)? E.g. on my Nokia E51 (an S60v3 device), #+Up / #+Down could be used for that and the same goes, I believe, for any keypad-equipped device.

I'm really glad to report that the super annoying constant crash issue is now finally solved with this version.

But then there is another really small rant, which is nothing compared to the constant crashing. Let's go in to that issue.

I'm wondering why start page button is grayed out at times. Then I need to close current tab, to get to start page, instead of using start page button from menu. It's bit harder to open tabs menu and close current tab than using menu and selecting start page from it. Also disabling start page button doesn't make any sense as far as I know. Could someone tell me why it's being grayed out, maybe there is reasonable reason behind this feature?

- Thank you!

Best regards,
Sami Lehtinen

In a tab , when you start browsing from the start page, you will notice that the start page button does not gray out. This is because the start page is available in that tab.
But in case you opened a tab with 'open in new tab' feature, you directly open that tab with the link. You didn't open it with start page. Hence, there is no start page for this tab and the start page button grays out.

Yes, that's exactly it. But why does it make any difference? If I opened that page from start page, from bookmarks or from 'open in new tab' link option? AFAIK, it shouldn't.

The new tab can be used as a main tab but in fact is not (that affect cache management), so you can close all tabs in any order but at the end reverting on frontpage ## (forward) command must reload from history all pages in correct order and that can't be done directly from the second window (debug: page count windows). Connection test is opened in another tab, btw.
