To add new search engines to Opera Mini, you actually need to go the page that has the search engine you want to use. For example, say you want to add Microsoft's Bing to your OM search engines.
1) Go to: m.bing.com
2) Touch and hold the touch on the search box on the page until the context menu appears. Touch "Add Search Engine", give your engine a name (or press enter on your keyboard if you're fine with the default name given), and hit enter on your keyboard. Your search engine is now added to Opera Mini 6.5.
Bing is only an example, so you can use it to try these steps out and when you're done testing, you can remove Bing and add your preferred search engines to Opera Mini 6.5.

It worked fine for me when I tested with Bing, but doesn't work with other, for example DuckDuckGo.com, which (as an aside) is now an included search engine in the desktop version of Opera.
After communicating with the DDG developer, I found that the DDG JS page is not rendering correctly in OM, so he forces DDG to the html version, which is why the method described does not allow users to add DDG as a search engine. I've asked for a work-around, will post if something springs to light.
Thanks, x-15a2. I've been wanting to add DDG as my default search engine ever since Linux Mint turned me on to them. I'm looking forward to making them my default search engine on all of my platforms.
IIUC the issue is caused by POST being used in form instead of GET method. But if you add in Opera desktop DuckDuckGo search with this URL pattern "http://duckduckgo.com/?q=%s" and do not mark POST as transport, after syncing you should get a working Duck search in Mini. Just tried and it works.
