Opera extremely slow browse when on start up
helloi've been using opera for a very long time, but this problem appeared to me first time about a week ago. when i turn on my computer, and then open the opera browser it takes long time to begin browsing. i open each time 2 or 3 tabs and wait for them to start downloading the page but they are remaining idle. most of the times, it takes about 1 minute to start downloading and even then it is slow. after 10 minutes, there is no problem at all. all downloading is back to normal. it is just the first 5 minutes that are slow. i know it is not my internet connection, because i have tried opening the same sites at the same time with firefox and it is significantly faster.
anyone knows what is wrong ?
Yeah, I've noticed the same thing lately. Opera is incredibly slow on startup, and may even stop responding for a few moments. Once it's had time to figure itself out, it's fine.
10 minutes??!!!,you must be boring about that .It always takes me about 30s to startup opera,IE only needs 10s
I had a very similar problem where Opera had become virtually unusable as it would take at least two minutes to load, and there was a similar delay before the screen would update each time I clicked on a link, and Windows Task manager showed Opera was constantly responsible for over 70% CPU usage throughout the delay period.
I was so frustrated that I uninstalled and re installed, but no difference. I even tried installing 11.60 beta, but this also made no difference.
Then I suddenly realised that my favourites etc. had not been removed, so I looked to see where all this data was stored.
I eventually discovered the reason for my problem, which is pretty much the same as I've experienced with Google Chrome in the past, and it is caused by over 64,000 .tmp files somehow being left in the sessions folder.
I'm using XP, and the .tmp files were located in "C:\Documents and Settings\{USERNAME}\Application Data\Opera\Opera\sessions", but I found it difficult to remove them by selecting and deleting because of the excessively high number of files.
I found it much easier to create a simple batch file which could delete all of these .tmp files with just one double click, just as shown in the following steps:
If you have as many .tmp files as I did, it can take a while to remove them all, but when it's finally completed, the DOS window will close and you should then find that Opera is back to normal again.
Hopefully this post will help others who may be experiencing a similar problem.
P.S. if any of you have the same problem with Google Chrome crashing, I found the excessive build up of .tmp files was in this folder:
"C:\Documents and Settings\{USERNAME}\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data"

- Browse to the sessions folder and then right click, select New ->Text Document.
- Open the .txt file and simply type: del *.tmp /q (making sure you type the spaces in as shown) and then save the file.
- Rename the "New Text Document.txt" file to "Clean.bat"
- Double click the file to run it.
