Labels gone and cannot create new labels

The other day, I shut down my computer and when I restarted the next day, the only options in my mail panel were the accounts - the all messages, mailing lists, labels, and attachments were not available in the panel, nor could I easily get them to reappear. I did eventually get them to appear, but all my labels, including the built-in Opera labels, were missing. Also, Opera seems to be downloading all recent mail (from the time before I shut down) twice. I did a lot of searching through the forums and found much discussion on this topic, but nothing seemed to solve my issue.

I am running Opera on Windows 7. I have not had any previous issues with labels and I do not recall anything out of the ordinary happening that would account for the missing labels or the change in the mail panels. If I try to create a label as a test, it disappears when I shut down Opera and start it again.

Does anyone have any suggestions I can try to get this working again?

I had exactly the same behaviour on two different computers (a PC and a laptop both XP).
On my laptop I realized that:
- I closed Opera
- I accepted to do Opera maintenance
- I shotdown the laptop after few minutes ..

Probably the maintanence did not finish.
The day after when I restared Opera the label disappered and it is impossible to either restore the old one or recreate new one!

This is a bis issue .. when you have thousand of emails!

Any help would be more than appreciated.

many Thanks

Open index.ini in the mail folder. What's the index count and what's the number of the last index in the file?

Do you have a lot of contacts and a lot of labels and mailing lists etc.?

Well, it is hard to tell exactly because they do not seem to be completely in order. The highest index is somewhere in the 9000s, but the one at the end of the file is 5575. I read somewhere in one of your comments about an issue with indexes greater than 5000, but did not see anything more about it anywhere else.

I do have a decent number of labels, probably about 50 or 60. I also have about 150 mailing lists, although a large number of them seem to be auto generated with a string of numbers in them. I have several thousand contacts as well.

Yeh, that's what I was getting at. You're probably running into that issue. See <http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1107152>.

Miracle! Solved!
I went through index.ini and it had more than 5000 indexes.

Openend it with MS Write and I noticed

[Index 251]
Name=...with some chinese letters...

The chinese letters had changed the standard Courier New - Western
character to
Arial Unicode MS - CHINESE_GB2312

This chars were kept for many rows in the index.ini and than at a certain point it was back to Courier New - Western .

This is what I did:
I opened Contacts and removed two contacts containg Chinese chars in the properties.
I removed few Mailing Listst filters. Just to clean up a bit.
I created a fake/empty label just to see if it would have had disappered after Opera restart .. as it used to do!

I restarted the browser .. and voila'!
The label did not disappeared as it used to do since I had the problem.

Now I have to recreate all the labels, but at least I have them working.

I hope this will help.
Gab
