Molly Malone never existed?!
An interesting article that claims Molly Malone as per the song never existed and was a myth helped by Scots!

That's what I was having trouble understanding. OK, have a laugh at Irish expense, just like the Drunken Scotsman song is a laugh at Scottish expense. But seriously Molly Malone seems more the stuff of tragedy than comedy.

Speed versus accuracy. The Scottish "joke" was so unfunny that the Irish, and others, actually empathized with poor Molly instead of laughing at her. Like I said, it probably did happen, even if her name was wasn't Molly. By the way, was Scotland so fortunate that there were no poor women suffering a similar fate? I think not; no country was. The Irish joke about the Sleeping Scotsman, on the other hand, is so hilarious people without Scottish or Irish ancestors laugh at it. Imagine a guy so drunk that he passes out and doesn't even notice young women tying a bow to his willie
You see, its a gentle, accurate ribbing and not a mean-spirit "joke" at the expense of poor women.Just so you're not confused, it's not because Molly is Irish.

Maybe I will write a story about her, forgetting the Lovecraftian nonsense that we were joking about earlier.

I fully agree the modern Ireland is somewhat different from the old and the Molly Malone days where it could never get out of the bit itself and indeed the Church controlled the strings and the police. That it has thrown out the Nuncio and closed the Rome legation shows they are moving on from living in shawls and that massive corruption. I have visited it more than once whilst over the Border and they are better educated and more progressive although there are still some nuts who haven't moved on but they are a minority. But to say that a few simple things will correct the situation is too simplistic. The bigger economies in Europe including our own have been subsidising these small nations or they would still be backwaters. And apart from that money we pay in we are now giving Ireland a loan of billions on top of that as a seperate thing. The new Irish government that has taken over has also found that things were ven worse than known too.
Originally posted by rjhowie:

You mean what's happened with Scotland the bigger economy to the south of it? Traditionally, Scotland is relatively poor country by European standards. So it seems a little bizarre that a Scotsman would mock a Irish girl for being poor, especially back then when Scotland was what we could call a Third World or Developing country itself. It's like a Zimbabwean mocking a Somalia for being poor today. Instead of mocking the fellow poor country, it would make more sense to trade resources, etc to help each other grow.

The usual. A combination of tax hikes and spending cuts. For example, many corporations such as Google transfer profits to Ireland for the lower tax rates. Ireland could raise some of the those taxes without risking damage to the economy. That's just off the top of my head; I'm sure there are deeper reforms that can be done.

The 19th century seen legions of Irish flocking to the Scotland which had shipyards, massive engineering plants, coal mining, railways to build and so on. A complete contrast to Ireland which had nothing and no great natural resources in case you didn't know? Those Irish of a particular ilk were ill-educated and took jobs and helped in many places create wider poverty. We ended up with a 6-figure Irish influx because there were jobs here! However your comment about the Scots attitude to the Irsh was the 19th century outlook as they seemed to be not too bright and told what to do by Gestapo like clergy. All good fodder for satire. A bit like Americans still do with Poles and Polish jokes........
In today's Southern Ireland they are having tax hikes and wage cuts and spending cuts all together and still in a quagmire. This mean even more and the EEC money is obviously not enough when they are content to take a further 7 or 8 billion of a loan from generous us at reasonable rates. Ireland depended on the EEC handouts and misused it hence the present horrible situation. I am happy that some of the money did improve things like education, wider attitudes and so on because the country was too poor and incapable of giving people what was needed. It had also lived on mawkish patriotism that was providing nothing after decades. That it is a more moderm pluralistic society is to it's credit. It it wasn't for the EEC they would still be stuck as a backwater and depend on us just to keep things ticking over.
I am also glad that there is a change in political attitudes and this came with better education and understanding and there are many Irish people today who are a credit thanks to Europe and bigger countries supplying the money for the improvements.

That may be true, but Molly Malone dates from the 17th century, not the 19th. The earliest audio recording of the song dates from 1883, when it was published in Cambridge, Massachusetts (from that area of the US, either by Irish immigrants or by their children) However, there are much older published lyrics to the song.

Those don't happen as often as they used to, but I see the point that you're making. I think those are rude too. The history of the jokes comes from the Poles attempting to defend their country against the NAZI war machine. It was the Blitz vs horseback cavalry. So, some small minded Americans thought. "

Mrs. Murphy gave a party
Just about a week ago.
Everything was plentiful,
The Murphys, they're not slow.
They treated us like gentlemen;
We tried to act the same,
If it weren't for what happened...
Well, it was a doggone shame.
When Mrs. Murphy dished the chowder out,
She fainted on the spot;
She found a pair of overalls
At the bottom of the pot.
McGinty, he got roaring mad,
His eyes were bulging out,
He jumped onto the piano
And loudly he did shout:
"Who threw the overalls
In Mrs. Murphy's chowder?"
Nobody spoke, so he
Shouted all the louder.
"It's a rotten trick that's true,
I can lick the drip that threw
The overalls in Mrs. Murphy's chowder."
They dragged the pants from out the soup
And laid them on the floor;
Each man swore upon his life,
He'd ne'er seen them before.
They were plastered up with mortar
And had patches on the knee,
They'd had their many ups and downs
As we could plainly see.
And when Mrs. Murphy, she came to,
She b'gan to cry and pout,
She'd put them in the wash that day
And forgot to pull them out.
McGinty, he excused himself
For what he said that night,
So we put music to the words
And sang with all our might:
"Who threw the overalls
In Mrs. Murphy's chowder?"
Nobody spoke, so we
Shouted all the louder.
"It's a rotten trick that's true,
And we'll lick the drip that threw
The overalls in Mrs. Murphy's chowder."
It satirizes the Irish family, but isn't as mean spirited as Molly Malone seems to be. Of course, it goes back to Molly Malone being so unfunny ringing so true that it passed into Irish legend. Mrs. Murphy was probably so drunk or silly that she put the overalls in the stew herself.

Neither are you right that Protestantism hadn't been there long or relatively new. In fact the Polish Reformed Church started in the 1500's (!). At one point almost 20% of the population and 45% of the Nobility. Thereafter it had a chequered history of ups and dows kind of naturally in a county with such a strong inbuilt Romanism. The Refromed Faith did have a constant syrggle in the 20th century in places like Poland and the other example, Columbia hence the magazine and newqsletter reports for the periods. As much as there had been some positive attitudes they ebbed and flowed and the power of the (R) Church pervaded most of the time.

So my point that Prots existed earlier and during the period you decided to bring up was correct. Poland didn't cease to exist at the end of the Commonwealth and in pointing out that Protestants were having a rough time right into the 20th century was valid in the overall picture rather than be static in one period raised by you. So all I essentially did was enlarge the picture in a moderate but it didn't deserve the reaction. I reckon I was being quite reasonable in my submission?

Still completely irrelevant. When the Commonwealth ceased to exist all its territory was divided up between Russia, Prussia and Austria. There was no Polish state until 1918.

I didn't say you're wrong either ( do you understand anything I write? At all?
) just that you keep missing the point by several miles every single time. You keep coming up with counters that have nothing whatsoever to do with any point I made. The original point was that the polish-lithuanian commonwealth was relatively tolerant regarding religions during its existence - remember, that was the time where other countries were expelling people or burning them at the stake for belonging to the wrong christian denomination. Treatment of protestants in the 19th century has nothing to do with that - the commonwealth ceased to exist much earlier.

This built-in arrogance to any view that doesn't fit you is not a pleasant thing and you resort to sneering arrogance re buffoonery or anything similar. You really must try and see things in a wider view than a blinkered "I am right and everyone else is not on my plain" attitude. You also indicated in a part about the 8th century and that Protestantism had only been there a short time before when in fact it was two centuries earler. So maybe you should control your own fecklessness before slicing at anyone else? When you do err (that can happen even with bullishness) you ignore it and instead bluff past such with condemnation. You must try and see that your sis only an opinion like mine or anyone else's and not some built-in fount of brilliance that othersdsomehow silly not to see. At least Molly Malone didn't exist but you do!

Even on the purely routine matter of that "Commonwealth" there were difficult times for Prots. So when you add before and after there has been degrees of continuity whether you like that or otherwise.
I'll take that as a resounding 'NO'

... and more of your usual huffing & puffing without any evidence of any comprehension whatsoever. This is pointless.

I would if there was anything to admit to, which you'd never know since you don't seem to understand anything I write
