How to force links to open in current tab

I would like to be able to browse without links opening up in new tabs unless they are explicitly middleclicked. Is there any option that will do that? I have tried changing the "Target Destination" setting to 1 (current tab) with no success, and also tried checking "Ignore Target" but that just made Opera think that all links opening in new tabs were unwanted popups--and then when I chose to allow the current popup it opened it in a new tab anyway. I would not be surprised if an extension were required to enable this feature (I had to use TabMixPlus to do this correctly in Firefox) but I couldn't find any.

Thanks.
