Anybody can debunk that? Is Mobile Safari really better than Opera?

I just read this article at
http://www.sencha.com/blog/apple-ios-5-html5-developer-scorecard/

where they boldly claims that (quote): "Mobile Safari continues to hold the crown as the best mobile browser, providing the best HTML5 developer platform"

However, this article only lists some benchmarks of Safari on iOS5 vs iOS4. I do not have a powerful phone to run tests on (Nokia N8 is only 640MHz) but I thought that here should be some people in this forum with the SGSII that could try to verify or debunk this claim. Or maybe Opera Mobile developers have some opinion on this?

Thanks in advance.

Meanwhile Opera Mini still works fine on my going on 5-year-old phone. For me, Opera Mini is the "best mobile browser". All depends on your needs. I don't have a need for something in between a feature phone and a netbook.

Anyway, my point is what the guy focuses on is personal preference and besides half of it is about the iPhone's hardware.

Uhmmm, I didn't know you could run safari on a android phone? Also as far as I know opera mini is the only version available for iOS. So any benchmarking would be... inaccurate. I could go into reasons safari is the top used browser but most of it would just be my opinion. The article focuses on HTML5 development and js/css rendering while dancing around what safari doesn't do (who said adobe flash? left right ).

No, you cannot run Safari Mobile on Android. But you can go to the same website with some standard compliance and speed tests on iPhone 4S and on Galaxy SII (with Opera Mobile) and compare results. Here are links to the tests mentioned in the article and their results in ms. I give for comparison also results on my laptop (core i540 2.4GHz 8GB RAM, SSD, running Firefox 8 beta and Opera 12 Alpha). I would appreciate if SGSII owners could add their results.

http://www.webkit.org/perf/sunspider/sunspider.html
2275ms iOS5
522ms on my laptop core i5 2.4GHz (Firefox8)
563 Opera12 alpha (sorry, only this one installed on my computer)

http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Performance/SpeedReading/default.html
10ms iOS5 (must be mistake? iOS4 850ms)
285 Firefox8
133ms Opera 12alpha

http://flashcanvas.net/examples/accelart.jp/blog/CanvasBench/CanvasBenchFlashCanvas.html
450ms iOS5
453ms Firefox8
623ms Opera 12 Alpha

You're comparing apples to oranges (or androids, lol). They are two totally different devices. To be honest the galaxy out classes the iphone by quite a bit.

My DX2 comes closer to matching the iphone but still differs significantly. I ran the test on the top android full mobile browsers and one control no name newbie I just like:

This is with my DROID X2 GB 2.3.4 mod/scripted/debloated...

1st
Opera - 2221.7ms
Firefox mobile - 1799ms
Dolphin HD - 3925ms
Ninesky - 3730ms

2nd
Opera - 218ms
FF - 420ms
Dolphin - 135ms
Ninesky - 528ms
*of note: opera and ninesky ran this flawlessly the others stuck once and I had to reload.

3rd
Opera - 2020ms
FF - 2403ms
Dolphin - 1930ms
Ninesky - 2591ms

**oops I forgot to test the stock browser, lol. Shows how much I use it huh? I'll benchmark and post later. lol

Okay, I had forgot I reloaded Opera and it was set to default. Here's Opera with user agent: desktop & turbo off (like I normally run it) with the stock browser's benchmarks.

Opera:
4008.1ms ?!
426ms
2690ms

Stock:
2279ms
424ms
2076ms

The only real way to compare browser stats is from the same device tho. All these numbers explain is why I use opera the most and like ninesky.

to me, those numbers show that mobile safari on 4s is in the same league with top android devices. Nothing to substantiate the title of their article. Thank you for testing.

No problem. In fact you have interested me with this... I wouldn't mind seeing a galaxy owner post.

Incidentally, my girlfriend's iphone 3gs /iOS 5:
4734ms
303ms
1996ms

I have another friend benchmarking her bionic 2.3.4 (stock) and I'll post it when she gets back to me. smile

For sure. This is why it's really just a matter of opinion.

Bionic 2.3.4 (stock)

She only uses dolphin... wouldn't benchmark opera for me. (Crazy chick irked ).

At the very least I see I should prolly tweak dolphin browser some. I only use dolphin mini as a secondary... occasionally.

3786ms
364ms
2213ms

Galaxy S2 Benchmark: ViperROM 2.1 Android 2.3.4 I did this test on wifi so network (3G) speed doesn't interfere with results

Sunspider:
Opera Mobile 11.5.3 : 6444.3 MS (strange....)

IE Test drive SpeedReading: 63 MS

Flash Canvas: 2070 MS

I am bit surprised with these results , but personally I don't these these stats interfering with the "real-world" performance when I pit my Opera Mobile with people on iPhone4S , Dolphin is incredibly slow I don't even know why its getting popular
