Why force beta installation?
Hi,I'm confused. The stable version of opera was automatically updated today. When I opened Opera, I found it's a beta version (11.60). I've never experienced this. Why is the installation of a beta version is automated?
I have opera-next installed as a separate browser and want to keep the stable version as a backup browser when opera-next doesn't work.
If the beta is working well, that may be fine. But, its menu is super slow (4--5 seconds before a submenu appears) and unusable. (I've reported it.)
Regards,
Ryo
I noticed the same issue on my (32-bit Ubuntu 11.10) netbook. Opera received an update from the repository, but it's only a beta. I installed it 'cause I had already tested it and found it working correctly for me, but it seems a bit of a potentially significant mistake that would mislead people who don't subscribe to the Desktop Team blog.

The Opera sources files looks like this by default:
If you manually uncommented the last line to opt into receiving betas your Opera 11.52 would have been updated. Most users have not done this so would not receive an update to Opera.
# This file makes sure that Opera Browser is kept up-to-date # as part of regular system upgrades deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ stable non-free #Opera Browser (final releases) # The line above will make sure you get all final public releases. # Uncomment the following line if you want to get alpha and beta # releases, too. # deb http://deb.opera.com/opera-beta/ stable non-free #Opera Browser (beta releases)

But I didn't. However, I did download the package to install it manually and somehow the Ubuntu Software Center messed up so I took to Synaptic to install GDebi and then it said the update was available. I suppose that could be Ubuntu Software Center's fault somehow. I really should get rid of that monstrosity 'cause it's the slowest program ever.

To clarify only the opt-in "opera-beta" repository was updated. The default repository "opera" was not.

Well look in http://deb.opera.com/opera/pool/non-free/o/opera/ as you can see the 11.60 build isn't even offered so if you still received it then apt/software center/update manager is reading deb source lines that are commented out.
Yeah, I just noticed that myself. Do you happen to know which log file(s) might shed a clue on what happened in my case?

First I would look in /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera.list and check that there is no uncommented "deb http://deb.opera.com/opera-beta/ stable non-free #Opera Browser (beta releases)" line. If there is then you need to work out how this got uncommented.
We don't touch /etc/apt/sources.list ourselves and the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera.list that our packages create certainly is commented. If you need to prove this to yourself have a look at the part of the post install script that creates these files in recent version of Opera and Opera Next, e.g.
Opera 11.52 32-bit final:
Opera Next 32-bit 12.00-1116:

One final point. If you use Opera Next for testing you do not need to uncomment the "opera-beta" repro, as we also offer the latest Opera Next version in the "opera" repro. You should only uncomment that line if you want your regular Opera to upgrade to Beta versions, which is exactly what happened here.
Hence the issue that you saw is actually intended behaviour at least from our perceptive. If you didn't intend to uncomment the opera-beta repro and this happened anyway outside of your control then perhaps there is some bug but this could equally be a problem with one of the package mangers on your system. It is not necessarily an Opera issue.

I don't recall uncommenting it, nor is my netbook a place where I experiment about, but I suppose it's possible I did months ago and forgot about it.

Just to let you know that I am using peppermint which falls back on lubuntu repository.
(no beta or other ppa for opera). I received an update notice for 11.60 a few days back
in peppermint update manager. I installed it and it is working fine.
This is the first beta update I have received.

(I keep this message short. First time, opera-next crashed when I pressed the Submit button; second time, I pressed the Preview button and the my.opera.com server resonded with a "Bad request" message. I hope this goes through, this time.)
another update appeared but does not work.
again with no beta ppa.
