Does the spam filter work at all? I don't recall the last time I got a message cought by it. Since a while I have to put messages there manually and I keep getting messages from the same addresses.

It does work for me - but in reverse way. lol I never had any spam messages. Today, I forgot my password to access examination results - so I clicked on 'Forgot my password' button and it sent my password to swapnil99pro@myopera.com - but the e-mail, despite being fully legit - was sent to the Spam folder.
I can't check whether the spam filter works for real spam or not - since I never received any spam message. My Opera Mail isn't yet popular.

Today I got a real spam message and the spam filter did not block it - I had to manually drag the mail to the Spam folder.

Hi guys,

I'll try to explain a little more about how it works, and why you're seeing some spam slip through.

All users use a shared Bayes filter until the system has "learned" what you personally classify as spam. After you've marked 200 messages as spam, and 200 as not-spam (which is hard to do in My Opera Mail at the moment, but we're working on it), you're using the shared filter.

Once your "personal" filter is activated, you'll find that the spam filtering is more accurate.

On top of this, there are a number of checks at the SMTP-level. You can read about what we check for here:
http://www.fastmail.fm/help/spam_virus_protection_smtp_stage.html

The biggest problem is that none of these SMTP checks work for email pulled via POP or forwarded from another service to My Opera Mail. Forwarding/POPing "destroys" lots of useful information unfortunately, making spam classification harder.

Lastly, if you're finding messages from a known sender repeatedly end up in spam when they shouldn't, add the sender to your address book. This will significantly reduce the likelihood of messages sent from them being classified as spam.
Please do not email me directly unless requested to do so. Thanks!

My god - I haven't even received 200 mails in total. Will take 2 years for me to get the "personal" filter activated.

Just to tell you:
I have used Gmail (until Google started the 13 year+ Google Account age limit and banned my account for that) and Hotmail (until it was a pleasant experience with Opera) before My Opera Mail. I created my Gmail account in 2009 and got it terminated this year - but during the 2 years I never got a spam message reaching my Inbox and never got a legit mail reaching the Spam folder. Same for Hotmail, I created my Hotmail account in February 2011 and terminated it in September 2011 - but same way I never got a real spam message in my Inbox and never got a legit mail in my Junk (Spam) folder. Why is it My Opera Mail only?

What I'm trying to report is that I haven't seen a single spam message moved to spam automatically in a long time (I used to).

EDIT!
Today I observed a message moved to spam so the above is not true. I was just judging by the tens of spam mess. I receive every week but they may indeed be those forwarded from my old mail account. In the light of your post, marianh, it seems to be the case. Thank you for the explanation BTW! smile

... Yup, the messages not being moved to spam come from my old account. I've just confirmed it by looking at "Show details".

Is there any information on when we could expect the introduction of rules that would automatically handle moving mess. to appropriate folders? This would practically solve it. If not it might be the time for me to ditch the old account. The spam messages are being sent by the mail service itself (sic!).

Today, the spam filter worked for me and blocked the e-mail from a false person pretending to be an IT company. Great going. yes

Blocked another spam message today - great. Looks as if Opera enhanced spam filtering.

From Bucic's post, I gather that posts marked as spam should be moved automatically to trash, but am I right in thinking that because of the 200-post "Bayes filter" thingy mentioned earlier in this thread, this auto-delete will not happen until this 200 'goal' is achieved?

My main 'problem' is with a old POP account - 100's of emails per day, with practically all of them spam! My Inbox often accumulates over 1000 emails, almost all marked as 'spam' but very very few seem to be deleted automatically - very very annoying having to go through that many emails, just to weed out the handful I want to keep...

Opera mail has always been a pain to use but these latest 'improvements' are nothing of the sort imo...

I see this is an old thread, but I can't find any newer with this topic.

I'm new to Opera mail and, indeed, I'm seeing that the "out of the box" (i.e., with no training at all) spam filter is much worse than that of any other mail provider I've used so far (Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail being the best known, but also some second-rate or just national providers). Approximately only 40% of the spam I'm getting is detected as such, while with other providers the accuracy was of about 96-98%. And, certainly, none of the forwarded messages (from my previous provider) gets classified as spam.

Is it that difficult to implement more efficient spam rules? Could it be possible to make it easier to profit the Bayes filter? Marking 200 messages at "not spam" can take a decade!

Just for Opera crew information, I've moved to Opera mail only for the sake of keep using Opera browser, because Opera's mail client doesn't handle well my other mail providers' IMAP accounts.
