Something different! Impressive drill from wee Austria

I came across this by chance as I hadn't realised that Otto Von Hapsburg was dead. It was part of a whole series of videos. His father and mother were the last Emperor and Empress of Austria-Hungary (they were very young when had to abdicate and she only died in modern times). He was 90 odd too when he died and had a high reputation on Austria for his service to the nation and was a member of the European Parliament. He also gave great assistance to the new members of the EEC from Eastern Eurpoean neighbours. He is buried in Austria but his heart in Hungary where as special service was also held.

What is interesting is that everywhere there were great crowds for the longest and largest procession seen in Vienna for a long time. Note espeically the guard detachemnt at the start in traditional field grey and their unique funeral march. It is impressive and very smart in it's execution. Quite a good impression of the Austrian Army.

And 5,000K more square kilometers than Scotland as well... Not to mention a much higher GDP both per capita and total (nearly triple total) Poor wee Scotland.

It also has higher mountains

And Vienna is much larger and more cultured than Glasgow, with everybody not moving out.

As Scotland is part of Gt Britain and not a sovereign country we are part of a land mass that is larger.

However, I would commend the list of attributes to Austria and and add mine to it. Their army is much smarter at ceremonial drill and could teach that pansy lot in their sunglasses over the pond as well. Wherever the ex-colonists got their idea of ceremonial must had been from a comic.

And that Austrian politician stuff is supposed to say what exactly? America has at least 8 State Governors actually charged and impeached into resignations. At least 3 have been from probably the most historically corrupt political machine and that of Illinois? So we can therefor follow the logic here and dismiss America like the dig at Austria? If you follow a democratic bent then you have to accept it's foibles. Hitler ironically did much for unemployment but there again a subtle political machiniation. Didn't the KKK reach well into 7 figures once and run not only towns and counties but States? The American mentality on democratic ideas is conditional that those whom it wants to dominate must follow their rather convoluted and odd ideas of what democracy is. A country where you have to state your political leanings to vote?! The thread was about the military anyway and I think that the drill in the clip by the start of the procession was outstanding. It could teach some, especially your lot. I mean soldiers in "ceremonial" walking like queers one foot ih front of another and with sunglasses on! Heavens! Coming from a military family I can still recall the guard at President Reagan's funeral, yikes.

What that Austrian guard did was outstanding for that wee country and it takes a lot of effort as I tried it for the fun of it! To do that for a long time closely watched takes some effort. Again well done to the Austrians for a remarkable drill and impressive procession which was a long one and in the distance covered. That they did what they did for someone they were proud of is to their credit. Definitely smart and precise for a military.

I watched a video of a guard of honour at the Washington Monument. The soldier with a rifle walking like a model on a catwalk putting one foot in front of the other in a straight line like a woman and wearing sunglasses. You will not see most countries changing guards acting like queers! And at the Reagan funeral a relation of mine commented that the guard with the coffin looked as he put it as if they were walking with pokers stuck up their arses. By all means be different and that is your right of course and you have efficent units but when it comes to ceremonial there are many countries especially the wee ones who can drill you off the parade ground. Yeah, I got the drill joke we aren't all beneficiaries of the ex-Colonies educational system! Watching the Austrians youcould learn something.

In a little context, you have to remember that you're comparing the funeral procession of would-be emperor to a daily occurrence at the Washington Monument.

Kind of you to pass it on Sanguinemoon and I have seen a moving vid as it happens hence my previous. Thanks. As for the changing of the guard thing that is meant to be an important event. Obviously not on the same plain I fully accept as a State funeral but the routine at such a monument was rather off putting to say the least. When you look at the changing of the guard in a whole raft of nations including many small ones they are way out in front on the ceremonial.

We all respect funerals and entitled to have ceremonial and no probs with that at all. But you are entitled to be honest. They do try but somehow it isn't the same. Being such a still newish nation in the list of things and long traditions elsewhere, it is probably not so easy to find your niche without copying someone else. It was right to put on something for a Head of State too naturally. There are still places in Europe who do a form of the goose-step by the way. Quite a difficult thing to do and the matter of the Austrians I think showed them in a very commendable light. They lost their Imperial side in 1918 but Franz Joseph who never made any claims or attempts at restoration, was held in high regard as a modern politician. It will be the last such "Imperial" event but it was very much to the credit of a small nation such as Austria. It still looked smart and is not easy. US troops tend to simply walk in step.
