Custom skin not showing up in Appearance settings list

Hi. I am just trying to make a small change to my skin. I haven't done any skinning before and I have a confusing problem.

Edit: problem solved, turns out I'm just an idiot. I didn't notice I was creating rars instead of zips.

I've made a copy of the standard skin from the C:\Program Files\ folder and made the changes I wanted. I added two icons to the \icons folder and added entries for them in skin.ini. The problem comes when I re-zip the folder and put it in the skins folder... the skin doesn't show up in the list of skins in the Appearance preferences box inside Opera. This is whether I put it in the C:\Program Files folder or in %appdata%\Opera\Opera\skin.

I even tried downloading a skin from My Opera, which shows up in the list, closing Opera and copying the name from that downloaded skin to mine but to no avail.

The only thing I can think of is that Opera only accepts signed skins from My Opera, but I know that wasn't the case previously from all of the web tutorials, I can't find any mention of it and it seems antithetical to Opera's hackability.

Can anybody help me?

PS: the only change I wanted to make was to add icons for JS bookmarklets that I have on my toolbar, this is an incredibly complicated solution and I really wish there were an easier way to do so. If somebody could tell me a better solution that would solve my problem also.

Like most things, its easy when you know how. Its not simple, but its certainly not "incredibly complicated" — it just takes a few steps: add the icons, edit skin.ini, rezip the skin.

The most common error is zipping the skin from the wrong folder, which results in an invalid skin that Opera won't recognise.

The resulting ZIP file must then be dragged to the parent \skins\ folder to replace the existing skin.

Since you're modifying the standard skin, you will need to close Opera before doing this.

That's what I did, but the skin doesn't show up in the list in appearance settings.

Try changing the name of the .zip file of your skin.

Sorry for wasting your time, I just realised that I had created a .rar instead of a .zip. Problem solved.
