'Remember Choice' checkbox never active.

I've never been able to use the 'Remember Choice and Do Not Show Dialogue Again' option when selecting which program to use by default for downloaded content. Is there a setting somewhere that turns this off by default as it's present on four different W7 machines (x86 and x64) and a Vista laptop (all running currently updated Opera).

I've seen a post on how to set the program to default to a non-Opera torrent application, but really don't see why I need to jump through these hoops for every association I want to set up.

If the checkbox is going to be inactive by default, what is the point of including it?

Any advice gratefully received.

Do you really think that the Opera developers are so stupid that they added a checkbox that never works?

It depends on the way that the web server is configured — Why are correct MIME types important?.

I'm sorry, I think I should have been a bit more clear in my original post. A couple of examples might help:

When downloading a pdf, Opera seems to recognise enough from the file to give me the list of PDF views I've got installed, but won't let me tell it to remember my answer to use the stand-alone Foxit reader by default (I find the plug-in can crash).

Likewise it recognises files as torrents, but won't simply let me use uTorrent as the default.

What's so difficult in remembering my answer?

I just configured my server to support PDF and 7z file types.

Download a 7z file such as Cankama.7z from my Fonts Page or a PDF file, such as the Character Map or one of the Typeface samples.

For the 7z file, the dialogue box should open, and the checkbox should be clickable. Check it, then download another 7z file. This time it should open directly in 7-Zip or any other supporting application that you have.

The PDF file should open in your Foxit Reader plugin — for me it opens in my PDF-XChange plugin.

If the server is not configured correctly (read the link in the previous post), the download dialogue will open every time because the web server doesn't correctly identify the file MIME type.

Thanks for the response - I had read the file you linked to - but clearly missed the point. Would I be right in assuming that a simple file extension isn't enough for Opera to identify a file-type and attempt to open it and that it's up to the server to do so? I'd probably be happy enough for a message saying incorrect file type when the file is attempted to be opened by whatever application, but perhaps there is some kind of security implcation in doing that.

The PDF files do indeed open straight into the Foxit plug-in (although I'll now have to find the settings to set it to open the standalone program).

7-zip doesn't appear in the list of programs for those files though - even though I have it installed. I'll check the associations.

Many thanks.

Adrian.

Dear Pesala,

thank you for huge amount of techical information. But that information is almost useless for ordinary end-users (like me).
Would you be so kind to point me, what should I change in Opera settings to allow checkbox "Remember Choice" for torrent files...

Vladimir

As far as I know, there is nothing you can do except contact the Web Master and ask them to fix it. If you use Help, Report a site problem, Opera might be able to do something if it is a major site.

Other browsers guess the MIME type — Opera does not, for the reasons explained in the above link.

Even Firefox does not.
Windows 7 SP1 x86 edition and Windows XP Service Pack 3.
