Cookie settings not being deleted

Hi,
I am having trouble getting into my online banking site because it is complaining that I have cookies blocked. Because I am generally in the habit of blocking cookies this may have happened at some point. However now I can't seem to change the settings back. OK, what I've tried:
1. opening bank site with another browser (not blocking any cookies) >> can login and access all website functionality no problems
2. changing the (Opera) site preferences to accept all cookies >> site still telling me cookies are blocked.
3. deleting any cookies settings for the site in the cookies manager >> site still telling me cookies are blocked.
4. closing opera, deleting cookies4.dat file, reopening Opera >> can log in to site no problems (after choosing to accept cookies from the same site address as points 2 &3 above).

The fourth option is not really an option because that means that I lose all my cookie settings (for all the other websites I visit) and I did that last time I had this problem. However this does prove that the problem is with Opera refusing cookies despite there being no current settings telling it to do so. It is almost like the cookies.dat file has been corrupted. Is this a possibility?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Nigel.

When you look at the site preferences after deleting the cookies for the site and reloading, do you see any cookies set?
And of course, you can always try to Identify/Mask as Firefox in the site preferences, maybe it's a website problem...

While file corruption is always a slight possibility on a computer, if a file is recreated and then is being re-corrupted, it generally points to something besides the file itself being to blame. Your description is a little unclear in one part. Are you saying that after you perform step #4 (deleting cookies4.dat and then logging in OK), Opera afterwards reverts to the misbehavior of steps #1-#3 if you try to again log-in?

As kOnte has suggested, try masking Opera as another browser (Edit Site Preferences > Network > Browser identification... select a choice > OK). It's always possible that the site is sniffing the browser flavor and dealing with cookies differently for different browsers that it detects.

Another possibility is that part of the Opera installation itself has become corrupted, damaging its interaction with cookies and/or its cookie file. To explore that case, you could try installing a second stand-alone instance of Opera into an entirely different-named folder (other than the current one) and seeing if it has an effect on the cookie blocking.
Opera 12.14u (1738), 11.52 (1100) & 10.63 (3576) running on various Windows systems from Win7-64 down through KernelEx4-modified Win98FE (proof that reports of Win98's demise are greatly exaggerated).

Wow, thanks kOnte and blackbird71 for your responses. That's another thing I love about Opera - an active support forum. OK, I've tried what both have you suggested but am no better off.

I'm running on the separate installation now and have just tried logging into the banking website (www.boq.com.au) to no avail.

I was pretty sure I had tried the browser identification thing before but just to be sure I cycled through all the options and between each one closing and typing in the address again in a new tab. Whilst doing this I found another interesting thing...
- After getting on to the home page I would check for any cookies with 'boq' in it and found nothing.
- I would then click on the logon link and a page would come up telling me I had cookies blocked - checked the cookies again and again found nothing.
- If the browser preferences are then changed (to anything) and the cookies are checked again (without refreshing the page) there is a cookie setting there - no cookie, just the entry you see when you have blocked cookies to a particular site, and if you delete you are asked again about accepting cookies from that site.

Why would changing the browser preference setting cause the cookie setting to reappear?
I tried deleting it and retrying to access the login page and not deleting it and retrying the login page with the same and different browser settings, but nothing has worked so far.

Any more suggestions as to what could be done to re-allow cookies from this website would be very much appreciated.
Cheers, Nigel.
