How do I stop all this highlighting as I move my cursor over the page?

I just now allowed Opera to install the new update. I hesitated to do this, as I usually don't like updating anything. And I was right to hesitate. It updated itself, and now it's doing all this weird crap that I don't want it to do, and now I have to spend my time figuring out how to stop it from doing all this stuff. I learned my lesson: say 'no' to updating.

So now I'm just moving my cursor across the page, and all of a sudden, the text is highlighting itself automatically for no reason. And things are appearing, like the option to send this to facebook or the option to translate something in another language, every time these highlighted text areas appear. And it's doing this constantly on every page. Well, okay, not EVERY page, but a large number of pages. I never saw it do this before I updated the browser.

How do I make it stop? I don't want to spend a long time hunting around for this setting.

Have you installed any extensions that might cause this? None of this sounds like normal behavior, so something is definitely wrong.

What OS and version of Opera are you using? Also, are you using a laptop trackpad or anything else that might be registering undesired mouse clicks? Opera shouldn't be highlighting text unless you've clicked and dragged.

You may also want to try a clean installation if you don't mind losing your settings. (The linked page shows a way to back up your settings so you can restore them later)

It sounds like you're double-clicking and seeing the hotclick popup menu. Preferences, Shortcuts, "Allow context menus." You could perhaps have a faulty mouse if the menu is appearing unexpectedly.

Not updating regularly is not recommended.

You know what, it just occurred to me that I could have a virus. Duh. It's probably some kind of advertising virus. Maybe I will try dealing with it like a virus instead of thinking it's a new Opera setting.
