Right click the "All Messages" heading, Select customize (only option) from the menu,
Untick the "Pinned" item in that list.

Ah! Thanks! Sometimes either Opera or me is unintuitive.

For most of us, it actually reads "Pinned" - I gather you have a custom language file?

I saw it at the top of the list as pinned. Then it suddenly went away and the blank one appeared lower down.

Ah I know what happened. Every time I install or upgrade Opera, it replaces my language file which is VERY annoying. I have changed something in it (I removed the "snip" to stop it writing snip several times every time it removes nested quotes over 5 deep). On this occasion instead of editing it I restored it from backup (which was an Opera Next 12.00 1116 file, not 1155).

Oh dear..... it comes back a few times a day. But no messages are ever in it. It just appears empty.

Did you look at the toolbar on the messages themselves? There is now a pin there. When you pin a message, it will be shown in the Pinned access point.

The pinned access point is empty. There are no messages.

If you haven't pinned any messages, then of course it's empty ...

I do agree though. If you don't use it you should be able to hide it. If you hide it, it should stay hidden until it has some content or you use the menu to unhide it (which you said is not what happens). This whole "force you to see things you don't ever plan to use" concept is a bad idea.

Well other things like mailing lists reappear when something is put into them, but the pinned one seems to come back for no reason - like it thinks something went in it.
