See if you can find opera_install_log.xml in Opera's program files directory. If it's already there, delete it or at least, right-click on it, goto properties and check permissions of the file to make sure the installer can write to it. Also, if you're running the installer on a standard user account and installing to the program files folder, you might need to run the installer as an administrator instead.
Did you download the Opera installer from www.opera.com and try to run it and install it over the top of your current install to upgrade it? Or, are you talking about the auto-update. Try the manual install way first.
