Opera ignoring system-wide proxy setting

On my Motorola Droid RAZR (Android 2.3) I have set the system proxy setting for my workplace wireless network. This works fine for the built-in browser.

However, Opera Mobile seems to ignore this setting, and there is no means to define a proxy server within Opera. Net result: I cannot use Opera while at work...

Can this be fixed?

Hi tachyon46,

I'm not an expert, so you should be cautious with my suggestions.

Have you checked the "hidden" configuration page. Type "opera:config" in the address bar and select the "Proxy" submenu. There you can define several types of Proxy servers. (And make sure to deactivate Opera Turbo while on Wi-Fi.)

Hope, it helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. But the hidden configuration page doesn't seem to exist on my installation. It cannot access this URL.

My apologies. My eyes aren't up to the small print. I misread ':' as '.'

I found the settings page. I won't be able to test it until I am in the office tomorrow.

Thanks

I am afraid the problem is deeper than I thought. I was able to set a proxy URL using opera:config. However, it seems that this proxy setting is universal -- it applies to all WiFi nets that I connect to. This means it works for me at the office (behind the firewall) but not at home or anywhere else.
In order to use Opera onother networks I have to get into the config menu, turn off the proxy... A real PITA

The Android system-wide settings are specific to each net that I join.

So why can't Opera use the system-wide settings? At least as an option..

BTW the options under proxy are so complicated you need a user manual to figure out what they mean.

Well, first of all, glad I could help. At least a bit... :-)

Did you follow the link in my first post? If you click on "opera:config" (<-- Just click here!) you'll get to a site where the Opera browsers' setting file options are explained. Many Opera Mobile specific settings are missing, though.

That would be nice, as long as it's kept optional. What I'm really missing is the ability to define several, independent profiles, since it could not only change the proxy settings but also change the bookmark list. This way you could pre-filter the sites you can/want to visit depending on the network you're on.

Meanwhile you can create a bookmark which points to "opera:config#Proxy". It opens directly the Proxy config submenu, so that you don't have to scroll down that much.

The "help" tag is so small I missed it the first several times I scanned the opera:config page.

But help is still lacking: the one item that looks like a possibility is "Automatic Proxy Configuration URL"
But there is no such item under Proxy settings! And the explanation in Help "URL of automatic proxy configuration file"
is not in any way informative.

Opera and Opera Mobile share the same core. But apparently some options are missing, like "Automatic Proxy Configuration URL" (file on server) and "Use Automatic Proxy Configuration" (local file). I would be happy if I could create two separate profiles for Opera Mobile, or at least install it two times in different directories.

I can't offer much help at this point. The only thing I can come up with is the suggestion of (in case you're not doing it already):
-- creating a bookmark for "opera:config#Proxy"
-- creating a note with the only information being the address of your company's proxy server
-- and then copy&paste (long press) the address using the bookmark every time you want to use your company's WLAN
-- to remove the entry just press "Default"

Or using Opera mobile and the built-in browser separately.

Use the same proxy settings as system:

Wrong forum for that link ... that's the desktop wish-list, this is the Android forum. I'll presume you posted the same thing in the OP's other thread? If so, I'll remove it so as not to waste people's time ...
