Errors logging in to mail accounts

Opera has started reporting a number of different errors logging in to mail accounts but it only happens intermittently. All the error messages start 'the sever responded:' followed by 'authentication failed' or 'server error' or ' server not responding' etc., etc. This started happening with 2 Yahoo accounts I have and I contacted Yahoo several times but they couldn't find any problem and now it has started happening with a mail account with my ISP and one I still use from an old ISP. I have tried re-entering all the settings and passwords but it never helps.
I just tried setting up Thunderbird with the same mail accounts and it can access them OK when Opera is giving error messages.
Using Opera 11.52 on Win 7

Do you have any anti-virus software (like AVG, which is buggy)? Did it update recently? Does it have an email scanner and or a web scanner?

Use the "standalone installation" in the installer to install to a folder on your desktop. Setup mail in it (don't import anything and don't uncheck "leave messages on the server"). See if it works fine in it. That will tell you if it's a problem with your normal mail folder/profile or not.

When this happens, does restarting Opera fix it?

Also, if you log the connection, you can also get more specific errors.

There's also lots of stuff you can try here.

Note that for yahoo specifically, their servers can often act up on a per-account basis where things work fine for everyone else. It'll start happening, last for about a week and then fix itself. But, if this is happening with other mail provider too, it's hard to saw if you're experiencing that problem and another one or just another one.

I am using Avast free version AV software, it updates 2 or 3 times a day, it has web and email scanning, I have disabled the email scans but it does not seem to have helped.
Also tried a separate install of Opera, everything seemed OK first time I ran it but second time one error came up straight away and another after about 15 mins , both for different providers, one said "internal server error (6532)" and the other was "username and password not accepted" but re-entering them did not work and the Thunderbird install I did accessed both accounts without problems.
Don't know if it makes much difference but I am using POP as I get a lot of duplicate messages with IMAP.
Tried a 'Mail Database Consistency Check' and a few other things which didn't seem to help but messed about with some other settings and have not had any errors for about 30 mins, unfortunately the only change I can specifically remember making was turning 'low bandwidth mode' off which I would not have thought does anything until after the connection to the mail server had been made.

If it happens in a "standalone installation" like you said, it's something outside of Opera. Also, "internal server error" is something the server reports to Opera. So, it appears the error is on the server.

Also, see these search results. There are quite a bit of yahoo-related results.

I have had the same problem for some weeks with BTInternet email in the UK, which uses Yahoo. Turning off AV and firewall makes no difference.

The errors happen with Opera on a variety of PCs, but not with other email clients

I've tried the various server name options suggested in various forums but nothing fixes it.

Interestingly, the errors are most frequent on weekdays and relatively rare on Sundays, which suggests a loading issue with the Yahoo servers.

I can only speculate why the problem is related to Opera, but I do notice that with several email accounts in operation Opera seems to interrogate them far more rapidly than e.g. Thunderbird. ***Is there a clue here?***

I have been having this problem for some time now. I have tried all manner of tests and this only happens with opera! All other email clients I have tried immediately after getting the message have had no problem. I have also noticed that if I click on "try again" there is no return of the dreaded message. As there does not seem to be an answer to this I have decided to "lie back and think of england" and not let it annoy me!

If I click on "try again" the box with the error message in usually (but not always) just keeps coming back.

In addition to the intermittent mail log-in problems my partner has just realised that she has not had any mail from her gmail account for some time, we have checked via webmail page and it would seem to have stopped being retrieved from around the beginning of Nov and I think this is possibly around when our other problems started with Opera mail, not sure if this coincided with one of the updates.
Have set the gmail account up in thunderbird and it is fetching mail OK.
I think I am going to have to abandon Opera mail and switch everything to Thunderbird.

Reinstall Opera over the top of itself to fix any program file damage.

Goto "menu -> mail and chat accounts -> the account -> edit". Make sure "include this account when checking manually" is enabled. Make sure "check every" is set to 10 minutes. Retype the username and password on the servers tab.

If this is with IMAP, delete the IMAP account and add it back in. If this is with POP, while Opera is closed, she can delete the UID file in the POP3 folder in the mail folder. See accounts.ini for the number for the account to see what uid file to delete. That will cause Opera to refetch all message in the Inbox and any new messages that come in should indeed get fetched unless something else is messed up. But, if one does this, for any messages that already exist in Opera and are downloaded again, they have to delete the old copies. Or, for POP, one can just do fix corrupted mail folder.

Tried installing opera over existing and deleting uid file etc. but no difference. Didn't try the corrupted mail folder fix, as thunderbird almost sets it's self up I think I will just go with that if I have to re do all the mail accounts.

I don't understand what that has to do with this thread.
