Daniel admits he and his mother could do little but stammer and stutter around each other for days after their cyberspace exploits came to light. And his father Paul -- Nicole's husband of 27 years -- wasn't too happy when the story hit the news and his beer-drinking buddies made him the butt of their jokes.

"Dad was ticked for a while and he forbid Mom to talk to anybody on the Internet ever again," said embarrassed Daniel.

Serves them both right though...this means that she was still married to his dad at the time....

Would they want to?

I suspect that they both blame the other, and never want to see each other again.

Of course we know that this time the story is true, but it has been an urban legend for a long time. Mother and. son, father and daughter, brother and sister, teacher and student. I believe that the invention of the telephone with its sinful anonymity began the stories, but it is clear that they predated the internet by decades.
Indeed, some of us do seem to have smutty minds.

I think Yahoo has a branding issue. The page states "Yahoo! Entertainment" loudly several places and only a couple places can you see "Weekly World News", and WWN is hardly known outside the USA, other similar fictitious news publications are as local as WWN. Yahoo! on the other hand is a global brand.

The upshot in the first run is that WWN "news" are believed because they are Yahoo, in the second run that the veracity of Yahoo would be in doubt since they are the people publishing fake news.

The part that is completely unrealistic is them blurting out the story to the cop. Surely the author could have come up with a more plausible way of the story coming out? Otherwise a quite entertaining tale.

The story got into the web edition of the third largest newspaper in Norway, where it also was the most forwarded story. They published a retraction but failed to link the original article to the retraction nor really admit any guilt for not checking the story in the first place.

The obvious question is "why now"? The original story was published weeks ago and was debunked well over a week ago. The interval between Christmas and New Year's Eve is a dead zone both for news and people working, but the paper still needs to be filled.

For news of the weird, see Chuck Shepherd's site.

Chuck also gathers weird news for the Washington Post. His most recent Post collection can be viewed at:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/23/AR2005122302042.html
An example, "Virginia capital-murder inmate Daryl Atkins, who had previously registered an IQ lower than the minimum-70 needed for execution, scored a 76, and a jury then sent him to death row. Legal experts attributed the improvement in IQ to the intellectual stimulation Atkins received from discussing his case with lawyers.

ABC News-AP, Aug. 14"

Another...
"Bring the Pain

South African Sonette Ehlers invented a tampon-like sheath that she says will reduce the country's disturbing number of rapes, but local anti-violence leaders are skeptical -- and alarmed. The 1-Rand (about 15 cents) device folds around the penis with microscopic hooks and, once engaged, requires medical intervention to remove. Critics say it is nearly useless, since a woman must wear one constantly to be protected.

Stretching credulity is one thing, but . . .
