Avoiding Duplicate Inbox Content for IMAP and POP setups
I recently configured an IMAP setup on my Windows 7 (Ultimate 64-bit) computer, in addition to the previous POP setup for the same mailbox, because I wanted to be able to control deletions, etc., from my desktop rather than having to go into the host mail server. In fact the IMAP user name and mail account are for the system administrator on the host system of my company website, and I don't want them public, so I have all personal mail routed to a mailbox with a more personalized user name and mail address. This worked fine until I set up IMAP, which created a problem for my membership of various SIGS in Google Groups. Yahoo Groups were unaffected. The problem is that Google will not accept the "reply to" and "redirect" associated with my personalized account, but insists on using the sys admin user name and address, and says (correctly) that these have not been registered for access to the Google Groups! Unfortunately, if I register these, they will become public, and I want to avoid that on security grounds. This is why I have set up IMAP (to administer the parent account) along with POP (for access to Google Groups). The problem is the duplicated INBOX content. Is there any way of eliminating the duplication? I was thinking maybe of piping one or other to NULL, if the Opera mail client allows that. Can anyone suggest a good approach? And how to go about it? I have contacted the hosting company, who say "That's not OUR problem." It may well not be the Opera Mail Client's problem either, but I would really value help in finding a good way to avoid having to read/delete/reply to E-mail in two virtually identical inboxes.
You can setup a separate account for each aliase, all the messages will be fetched for each of those accounts and you'll get duplicates. In the properties of each alias account, you can set it so it never checks for messages. But, that's still not a true alias solution.
If you use Gmail IMAP, Opera handles its duplicates by hiding them. But, see <http://my.opera.com/operawiki/forums/topic.dml?id=1161772> and <http://my.opera.com/operawiki/forums/topic.dml?id=1145862>.
For other types of duplicates, you can click the view button on the mail toolbar above the message list, goto "show" and uncheck "show duplicates".
Also, you can use the account selector to only show messages from a certain account at a time.
That's about it.

Just a word to let you know that simply using the account selector works fine for what I want to do. I didn't say it in my original post because it wasn't the central issue, but one of the reasons for wanting an IMAP setup was because my iPad 2 keeps downloading mail that I've already read and I couldn't find any way to stop this annoying habit. It's no fun having to delete the same thing several times over, especially if you have as many mails a day as I do. I now scan the POP account, save to the internal Opera mail database the posts I really want to archive, then select the IMAP account and delete everything (this is on my dual IMAP/POP desktop). On the iPad I can scan mails, too, knowing that I can cut off the multiple downloads as soon as I get to my IMAP setup. It's not tidy, but it works. If you have any further suggestions for tidier solutions of course I'd love to hear them.
