A rather costly and naked eccentric walker!

Stven Gough is a rather controversial eccentric. He is known as the "Naked Rambler" and has for a decade now been hounded for insisting on wanting the right to ramble nude. He did attempt to walk the length of Britain from Land's End to John O' Groats but kept getting arrested. In England there is no law on nudity but north of the Border he has been continually jailed some 20 times now. This has included appearing in Court naked as is his right he says. On occasion he has lasted 30 seconds and been arrested coming out of jail nude. He also refused to wear clothes in prison and normally he is in solitary confinement.

In the South he tended to get out of Court due to the law whilst up here he has been arrested for (possible) Breach of The Peace. In fact very few actually make a complaint but it seems he has spent most of the last 10 years in northern jails! No-one is arguing a cause that everyone should go about like this whilst at the same time we do have a rather interesting problem on anything sexual. He had a girlfriend for a while who joined him in the same state but they broke up and she still supports him. Over the years he has cost hundreds of thousands of pounds whilst he argues on the principle. He did eventually complete the length of the country inbetween jail. One Sheriff (A Sheriff is a Court judge in Scotland at the middle tier) stated he would end up spending his life in priosn but he refuses to give up.Gough has also been jailed for contempt of Court as he doesn't wear anything in the dock.

It isn't some widespread thing and he is the sole person following this matter of rights but once we get beyond our hang-ups are we overdoing the concern about the human body?

Not bad Jaybro. Gough used a cardboard box held up by string on one occasion in London. Whe he passed people a family went by and the kids just looked smiled and everyone went on! However i must compliment you on covering so that people aren't frightened. yikes

All that Chicago can come up with is the Walking Man. There's a guy who seems to spend much of his time walking around the Loop and the Near North Side, that's all he does all day every day. Nobody seems to know who he is or why he does it, but unlike your version, he's always clothed and to my knowledge hasn't done anything to get arrested for. He's mostly a North Side curiosity.

Just another minority looking for special treatment, huh?

Why, he should act like the rest of us normal people and not try to show off how different he thinks he is from the rest of us.

Isn't that how this works?

Your local mjsmsprt40 is rather unadventurous as eccentrics go. Gough has been jailed more often in Scotland than in England due to us having two different legal systems in the UK. The man doesn't bother m and he is a one-off and there has been no mass joining support whatsoever. I think we do sometimes have hang-ups on the matter of nudity though.

Hey string, I didn't know you hadn't helped but he chats to the fully clothed and string more convenient and safer than cellotape.......

According to one poster on Youtube, he's also the Burrito eating man!

i see him every day he eats 4 giant burittos but the thing is he eats them in a resturant (unnamed) that doesnt sell burrittos WHAT COULD THIS MEAN?

Is he eating burritos to keep up his energy on his walks or something more nefarious...yikes Why, with all those giant burritos he could turn himself into a walking biological weapon...yuck

The man is really quite harmless. Many people see worse on the tv or cinema, etc. The 'unca guid' who have those hang-ups whimper about kids seeing him. What world do they live in? Most children these days are not as in the past and it surprising what they know and see. Where he has been seen by say a family the kids don't seem perturbed at all. Indeed years ago a documentary about Naturism pointed out that the kids there grow up with less hang-ups than the routine! Admittedly they are in a more private domain and in general most people don't get too fazed about him. There is a long history of eccentrics and as I say there is no mass of folk rushing to join him. The only one was his girlfriend of the time and although she is with someone else now she still supports him.

Whatever we think of him - silly, pointless or amusing, what I would say is that it takes one heck of a bit of courage to walk about naked apart from a rucksack as he has done from one end of the country to the other. And the attitude of the powers that be that be north of the Border is that he will spend the majority of his life in and out of prison. Well he might and by that time the cost will be into 7 figures! They should just ignore this solitary figure out of around 61 million folk and let us be amused by his stance and determination!

The solution to this is really very simple.

A mandatory full body tattoo.
