Opera Mini 6.5 for BlackBerry has been updated

A couple of weeks ago, we released Opera Mini 6.5 for Java and BlackBerry. Among the new things in the BlackBerry version was simpler and more reliable code for connecting to the Internet when using a BlackBerry with OS 6 or higher. Unfortunately, it... well... it didn't actually work for everybody worried. Thanks to you guys making us aware of the problem (it didn't happen on our test devices), we've now been able to make a fix for this issue. If you've had problems connecting over 3G with Opera Mini 6.5 on your BlackBerry, we strongly encourage you to download the new version.

To download the new version, visit http://m.opera.com on your phone, or visit http://www.opera.com/mobile/download/versions/ on your PC.

Thanks to everyone who made us aware of this issue, both here in the forums, and via our bug report wizard, and a special thanks to a handful of users who agreed to help us test the fix on their phones. You're all awesome!

This update works fine over BIS on all the devices we've tested. Are you still having connection problems? If so, make sure you have the newest version. You can check that you are running the correct version by clicking menu -> help -> about opera. It should say 6.5.27548.

Hi,

I have just downloaded new Opera mini on BB Bold 9780. During installation it says: "Unable to connect .... Please check your settings.". It seems problem has not been solved yet. Opera ver. :6.5.27548. Other 3rd party apps work fine with internet connections.

A second question: Have you filled in the APN settings on your device (usually found under "advanced" -> "tcp"). If you have, can you try removing the APN data and see if Opera can connect over the mobile network (no wifi)?

Wifi switched off.
a) APN enabled - opera is not connecting, build-in browser is able to connect
b) APN ticked-off - opera is not connectings, build-in browser still can reach internet

BB 9780, OS 6.0 subversion 2534

I have just switched "Protocol" in Opera's settings from HTTP/Socket -> HTTP. Now working. Thank you for support.

1. Thanks Opera, for fixing the bug. I'm very pleased with this version. To me, its the best since 4.x!
2. Thanks to "strictlyonlinebiz" for reporting the previous bug.

Opera Mini 6.5 does not work! Ver. 4.2.2 works (althought it's mostly worthless and can't open any web sites except Opera Portal) but 6.5 won't do anything at all on my BB 8120. After taking FOREVER to install it then just says No Connection and the only option is to exit! The developers need to go back to the drawing board and come up with something better. And test it this time to see if it even works before releasing it!

There are gazillion different BlackBerry models running different OS versions. It would help if you provided your os version.

OM works just fine on my older BB (8830 with os 4.5.0.169) and it works ok on lots of newer models, with both physical keyboard or touch screen. Did you try to uninstall OM, doing soft reset or battery pull, and reinstalling OM?

I've been trying everything for hours to get the stupid OM 6.5 to work. I installed ver. 4.2.2 and that did work, well as good as can be expected since it doesn't really do much. I uninstalled OM 6.5 but then tried it again and got it working somehow. I'm not sure what finally made it work but this is just really poor programming. A program should work the first time and not have to be removed and reinstalled again to make it work!

@Opera Team: please is therfe a way to integrate Open in Opera Mini into the menu of BlackBerry apps like Facebook and Twitter for BlackBerry?

Copying and pasting links to and fro these apps kinda take away from the smooth opera mini experience.

Thanks for the new release once again bigsmile

Hey how do I get Opera Mini 6.1 back? I want my Opera Mini 6.1 back on my BB Torch 9800/6.0.0.600 . Opera mini 6.5 sucks big time and cannot even post in forums with it or my BB native browser. Help! ! ! This 6.5 and native browser are both junk and painfully painfully freakin slow!! OM is constantly freezing and lagging with text entry and BB browser ALWAYS did suck.

I now want to use APN settings as I'm in ZW one of the few countries with no blackberry service.

I'm getting this error:
"Connection Failed.
Unable to connect. Please review your network settings.
[Retry] [Cancel]"

- My WhatsApp application that also uses data is working fine.
- Also I managed to send this message using my built-in browser and APN settings.

How do I make Opera Mini use my APN and not BIS settings?

I once changed my "Network Mode:" from "3G & 2G" to "2G". You find this under "Mobile Network Options". Try it it might work for you.

in fact 2g instead 3g is recommended to boost wi-fi connectivity at start so likely 3g>2g change is an echivalent for phone reboot (searching network) and reverting to original connectivity parameters, however the issue is that opera mini doesn't work by default via gprs if I understand correctly.

That's it !

indeed, it works using 2g, but not with 3g

opera mini doesn't select 2g by default when it has the possibility of 3g connection

Hey there Opera, how and where can I get Opera Mini 6.1 back on my BB Torch 9800/6.0.0.600. Downloaded 6.5 thinking I saw it was updated but only the latest post in the forum was updated. Installed it before and it didn't work and still the same now! I would like Opera Mini 6.1 back on my BB Torch 9800/6.0.0.600 . Opera mini 6.5 is slow and my BB native browser is slower yet and if I dare back up to an already loaded page and tag a link there: "communication error - failed to connect if this problem continues contact provider"or some very like message appears. Help! ! ! This 6.5 and native browser are both painfully painfully freakin slow!! OM is constantly freezing and lagging with text entry and BB browser ALWAYS did suck and chess boards at chess.com are rendered as 2 columns of 8 alternating coloured rectangles rather than 8 columns of 8 alternating coloured squares. Chess boards at Cellufun.com are shown okay albeit in miniscule form. This is not good news for this chess addict!! Now cannot find Opera Mini 6.1 for BlackBerry anywhere and I want it back! Please and Thank you.

@eg13 - just tried what was suggested to you about using 2G service but regardless of service mode 2G or 3G still slower than 6.1 and chess booards are not rendered properly at chess dot com. Chess boards at Cellufun do look like proper chess boards but the 'highlight overlay' for picking pieces to move and moving are not the same size so the chess board with pieces do not match the pick and move overlay.

Also still having a lot of trouble posting in the bugs wizard. Had to back up several times to get back to text entered in all those fields before I finally got confirmation of it posting or being sent.

perhaps a bug in that firmware, bad pattern anyway if 3g works with build-in browser and not with java apps. Also is true that Opera Mini tend to use the maximal bandwidth, feels like +10kb/s in page loading or downloads.

I cannot download any large files.. Please help. Using BB Bold 9900

I've read that Opera Mini (or any other third party browser) can not be made the default browser on the Blackberry platform. However, is there any workaround or way to do this as the default Blackberry browser on the the Bold 9**** series is dreadful as it's incredibly slow, (especially as my usual connection is GPRS) and very often just gives up and crashes. At the moment I have to cut and paste links into OM which is a clumsy way of doing things, surely there must be a simpler way?

Thanks.

I've added OM to a BB Convenience Key which is a lot more helpful when using Twitter and other apps, but still doesn't solve the problem of having to cut & paste every link.

What download limits exists on your device also affects opera mini. If you are having issues downloading large files, I suggest you look at PodTrapper (http://www.patchworkoftips.com/download-large-files-on-blackberry-device/355/) and UC Browser for BlackBerry (http://www.patchworkoftips.com/blackberry-web-browser-download-manager/663/).

The links would guide you on how to go about downloading large files with these apps.

Enjoy bigsmile

I want OM have more shorcut. Now, you can use 2 systems shortcut: OM, or BlackBerry. But, the shortcut in OM mode is too little. With BB users, the shortcut is a very-important problem. So I use BB mode. But, BB mode do not have forward, and "left-tab"-"right tab"-new tab...
I am also use UC Browser too. And I think the shortcut system of UC is better OM. And, the UC is not "heavy" as OM!
This is two problem which I want OM team will improve next version.
Thanks.
